Friday's 2B Softball: Adna, Napavine Both Reach State Semifinals

YAKIMA — Adna and Napavine were both still in the championship hunt here Friday after the first day of action in the State 2B Softball Tournament at Gateway Sports Complex.

The Pirates, who finished third in the Central 2B League and the District 4 tournament, will take on undefeated Northwest Christian (Colbert) in their semifinal matchup. The Crusaders, sporting a 27-0 record, beat defending state champ Pe Ell-Willapa Valley in the quarterfinals, while Adna topped Dayton/Waitsburg and then Kittitas-Thorp to reach the semifinals — which the Pirates last played in two years ago.

Napavine, meanwhile, is seeking the first softball championship in its program history and looked the part on Friday. The C2BL and District 4 champion Tigers no-hit Liberty (Spangle) in the first round, then blanked Onalaska, 6-0, in the quarterfinals. Napavine, which finished second in last year’s state tournament, takes on Ocosta at noon. The Pacific 2B League champion Wildcats are playing in their first-ever state semifinal.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley and Onalaska open consolation play at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with the Titans facing Brewster and the Loggers facing Orcas Island. Both teams will need to fight through three loser-out games to reach the third-place contest.

Quarterfinals

Adna Outlasts Kittitas/Thorp

YAKIMA — Adna fought off Kittitas for three straight extra innings to earn an 11-7 win in the State 2B softball quarterfinals here on Friday night.

The Pirates appeared to have scored the go ahead run in the bottom of the seventh, but the officials reversed a call on the field to keep the game tied at 4-4.

The Coyotes had a runner on third in the bottom of the seventh with one out, but a bunt attempt was caught by Haley Rainey, with the throw to third doubling up the runner to send the game into extras.

Kittitas had another chance in the bottom of the eighth inning with a runner on second and two outs. The Coyotes hit a single up the middle, but Ruby Bower came up throwing from the outfield and gunned out the runner at home to keep the game tied.

In the ninth, Olivia Rodriguez hit a two-run home run to give the Pirates a 6-4 lead. Kittitas answered in the bottom of the inning and hit a bases loaded double to tie the game. Rainey struck out the next two batters to keep the game going into the 10th.

Skye Snow hit an RBI double in the 10th for the lead and Emma Eko came around to score on a double by Rainey for the game-winning run.

Rainey pitched all 10 innings for the Pirates, striking out 12 while only allowing just two earned runs.

Rodriguez was 4 for 5 at the plate with four RBIs and three runs.

Napavine Blanks Onalaska

YAKIMA — Abbi Music allowed just two hits in the circle as the Tigers earned a spot in the semifinals with a 6-0 win over Onalska in a state quarterfinal game.

The Tigers scored five runs in the first inning and added a run in the fourth to secure the win.

Music struck out 11 batters while issuing one walk.

Northwest Christian Upsets Pe Ell-Willapa Valley

YAKIMA — There will be a new 2B softball champion this year, as Northwest Christian took down the defending state champion Pe Ell-Willapa Valley Titans 8-4 here Friday in a state quarterfinal game.

Kamryn Adkins had three hits and Katelyn McGough added two hits and scored three runs for the Titans.

PWV took an early 2-1 lead after the first inning, but the Crusaders scored four runs in the third inning to take the lead and added three more runs in the fourth inning.

The Titans had an inside-the-park home run from McGough in the seventh, but it was too late.



First Round

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley Rolls Past Orcas Island

YAKIMA — Pe Ell-Willapa Valley scored 12 runs in the first inning and never looked back, defeating Orcas Island 12-0 in five innings in the State 2B softball tournament opening round game here on Friday morning.

Katie Adkins pitched a complete game in the circle, allowing three hits with three strikeouts.

Orcas Island had five errors in the loss.

The Titans had 12 runs on 10 hits in the first inning to put the game away early.

PWV advanced into the quarterfinals to face Northwest Christian (Colbert).

Napavine Holds Liberty Hitless in Opener

YAKIMA — Abbi Music and Ada Williams combined to throw a no-hitter for Napavine in a 10-0 win in five innings over Liberty (Spangle) in the State 2B softball tournament opening game here on Friday.

Music recorded two hits and two runs and Maddie Thompson and Williams each scored twice, with Williams hitting a double.

Jenna Sissons added a double and a run for the Tigers.

The Tigers scored four runs and added two more in the third before ending the game in the bottom of the fifth with four more runs.

Napavine moved on to face Onalaska in the quarterfinals.

Adna Dominates Dayton/Waitsburg

YAKIMA — The Pirates collected 11 hits and shut down Dayton/Waitsburg to cruise to an 11-0 win in six innings in the State 2B softball tournament opener here on Friday.

Olivia Rodriguez had a double and a home run and Skye Snow added two hits including a triple. Kaylee Ashley and Abby Kruger each hit a double.

The Pirates scored three runs in the second innings for the win, but added three insurance runs in the third inning. Adna scored a run in the fifth and four more in the sixth to end the game.

Adna moved into the quarterfinals to take on Kittitas/Thorp.

Onalaska Tops Brewster in Extras

YAKIMA — Onalaska and Brewster couldn’t settle the game in seven innings, but the Loggers scored a run in the eighth to edge the Bears 5-4 in a State 2B softball tournament opening round game here on Friday.

Hayli Howard had two hits including a triple and two runs. Ashley Pannkuk added two hits for the Lady Loggers.

Onalaska scored three runs in the second inning for an early lead, but Brewster answered with three runs in the third inning to tie the game. The Bears gained the lead with a run in the fourth, but the lead was short-lived as the Loggers tied the game in the fifth to send the game to extra innings.

Onalaska moved on to face Napavine in the quarterfinals.
