CATHLAMET — The Pirates pulled away from the hometown Mules right from the get-go here Friday night, outpacing Wahkiakum 20-2 in the first period on the way to a resounding 69-32 Central 2B League victory.
The Pirates were lead in scoring by Blake Davis’ game-high 17 points while Conner Terry and Tanner Rigdon added 14 and 10 points, respectively, for Adna. As a team the Pirates shot nearly 57 percent from the floor.
“It was obviously a good start. Our defensive was fantastic. As good as it’s been in the first half,” said Adna coach Luke Salme. “That was our focus, was just kind of getting back to the basics.”
The Pirates had their swagger working from beyond the arc all game long, firing away at better than 50-percent clip by shooting 9 of 17 on the night. Davis led the Pirates’ 3-point barrage with a 5 of 6 performance.
The early commanding lead allowed Adna to play fast and loose with their lineup. Making the most of his newfound time on the hardwood was Terry, who scored a season-high 14 points.
“Conner Terry had a great game. That’s one of the things that makes this team so special. He could probably be getting some more minutes for some other teams in our league but he’s with us instead and he just keeps on grinding,” said Salme. “Everybody scored. Everybody got a lot of minutes so there was a lot of opportunity for some guys who don’t usually get a lot of minutes.”
Adna (12-3, 10-1 league) will host undefeated Napavine on Wednesday in a matchup that could determine who takes home the Central 2B League title.
“It should be a fun night,” said Salme.
Napavine Routs Mossyrock
MOSSYROCK — Six Tigers hit double figures here Friday night in an 87-50 C2BL win over Mossyrock.
Peyton Stanley scored 17 points to lead Napavine, which led 32-14 after a quarter.
Wyatt Stanley hauled in 14 rebounds and scored 10 points for the Tigers, while Austin Filley scored 14, Jordan Purvis scored 12, Isaac Subitch scored 11 and Randy Kinswa added 10.
“They’re a phenomenal team,” Mossyrock coach Kelly Ross said. “They came out and got a lot of pressure.”
Justin Gootgeld led the Vikings with 16 points. Jovani Mendoza added 12 points, four rebounds and four assists, and Taylen Clevenger scored 11 with six rebounds. The Vikings were playing without leading scorer Evan Gootgeld in the loss.
Napavine shot 57 percent (39 of 68) from the field, and led 83-32 after three quarters.
“We didn’t quit. We did discuss that we didn’t want to give up 100, so I think that was in the backs of everybody’s minds,” Ross said. “We wanted to at least win the quarter, and we had an 18-4 (fourth) quarter.”
Mossyrock (4-9, 2-8 league) hosts Morton-White Pass on Saturday in a rescheduled league game. Napavine (12-0, 9-0 league) plays at Toutle Lake on Saturday.
Loggers Go Cold in Kalama
KALAMA — The Chinooks jumped out to an early lead and kept the Loggers out of sync all night here Friday in a 58-23 C2BL boys hoops win.
Alex Dyer led Kalama with 15 points. Cameron Walker added 12 and Blake Stemkoski chipped in 10.
“They’re strong and athletic, and they get north to south on you,” Logger coach Dennis Bower said. “We can’t get downhill to save ourselves. We’re just not very quick, and they pressed us, like usual.”
Onalaska had 19 turnovers in the game, and trailed 33-14 by halftime. Ashton Haight and Jack Beck each scored 6 points.
Kolton Covey provided energy off the bench for the Loggers, Bower added.
Onalaska (5-10, 3-8 league) plays at Rainier on Wednesday.
Toledo Tops Rainier
TOLEDO — Toledo held Rainier to just 2 points in the first quarter, setting the tone for the Indians to earn a 59-31 win in Central 2B League basketball here on Friday.
Carmen Robles led all scorers with 15 points, Reece Wallace added 12 and Joe Wallace chipped in 11 for the Indians. Dillon Stancil led the Mountaineers with 12 points.
Toledo’s defense was almost matched by its offense in the first quarter, as Robles scored 8 points and the Indians hit four 3s to jump ahead 19-2.
The Indians were 10 of 24 from behind the arc, and Toledo coach Grady Fallon noted Reece Wallace’s defensive effort against Rainier’s Devan Stancil.
“We finally come out hot and were attacking the basket,” Toledo coach Grady Fallon said. “He’s (Stancil) capable of 20-plus (points). Reece said I want to take him and he did. He did a good job.”
Toledo (11-4, 8-3 league) is back on the hardwood Wednesday at Mossyrock.
Ducks Run Away Late to Beat MWP
TOUTLE — Matt Poquette scored 20 points with 12 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough for the Timberwolves here Friday night in a 74-53 C2BL boys hoops loss to Toutle Lake.
The Ducks turned a 6-point lead after three quarters into the final 21-point margin with a 26-point final frame, helped by the Timberwolves’ 12 second-half turnovers.
“They changed up their press and we didn’t do a good job of handling that,” Morton-White Pass coach Tony Gillispie said. “They started pulling ahead, and the game just changed that quick and it was over.”
Rylan Collette added 19 for MWP, and Kade Gillispie chipped in with 10 points.
Cam Swanson led Toutle Lake with 25 points, and Nate Hoff added 20. The Ducks shot 54 percent (32 of 59) from the field in the win.
The Timberwolves did, however, attempt 19 free throws, against just two for Toutle Lake.
“We’ve been trying to tell our kids to attack the rim, and that’s a good thing,” Gillispie said. “Defensively, I thought we played well, except for that (second-half) six-minute stretch.”
Morton-White Pass (7-6, 4-5 league) plays at Mossyrock on Saturday.
