LONGVIEW — The W.F. West duo of Joseph Chung and Cade Cameron came up just short of earning a berth into the state tournament at the District 4 2A boys tennis tournament at Mint Valley here on Friday.

Chung and Cameron started off the tournament on Thursday against Ridgefield’s Jonah Kropp and Mikey Nester, falling in three sets, 6-0, 3-6 and 6-4. The duo then faced teammates Jacob Blomdahl and Christian Iverson and won, 6-0 and 7-6 (7-5), to survive the first day of the tournament.

The Bearcat duo then faced Tumwater’s Peyton Peterson and Gunnar Fields, a rematch of the district championship game, which Chung and Cameron won again, 7-5 and 7-6 (7-2). The win moved the two into the consolation finals against Kropp and Nester with a state berth on the line. Kropp and Nester won in three sets, 2-6, 6-4 and 6-4.

“It was a close match. They had some opportunities in the second set to finish it off and had an opportunity to go ahead 5-4 in the third set and ended up losing that game,” W.F. West coach Jack State said. “There were seven deuces in that game, five of those it was our advantage and we weren’t able to come away with the win.”

Chung and Cameron will be alternates to the 2A State Tournament in May at Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.

W.F. West’s Gabe Cuestas started the district tournament on Thursday against Columbia River’s Matt Rudi and fell, 6-4 and 6-2. Cuestas took on Washougal’s Wyatt Sims in his next match and lost, 6-4, 6-1, to end his season.

Blomdahl and Iverson began the district tournament on Thursday against Columbia River’s Max Firstburg and Alex Miller, falling 6-0, 6-1. Blomdahl and Iverson then lost to Chung and Cameron to end their season.
