Boys Basketball: Bailey, Sipe Lead White to All-Star Win

Anyone could have predicted, going in, that Hodges Bailey was going to score a lot of points in the Southwest Washington Senior All-Star Game.

That didn’t make how he did it any less impressive or fun to watch.

Bailey, Centralia’s high-scoring senior guard, did almost all of his shooting from the 3-point line or, more typically, far beyond it, and scored a game-high 30 points to help the White squad to a 135-113 win.

How many times did he shoot?

“Uhhh… Twenty-five? I have no idea. No idea,” he admitted afterwards. “I mean, I’ve already signed (to play college ball). Everything’s already happened this season, so it’s just to have fun.”

He tossed in seven 3s in the first half, mostly with a hand in his face and sometimes from more than 10 feet behind the arc, to help the White squad — coached by Adna’s Luke Salme — to a 75-50 lead.

That team, though, had a whopping seven players in double figures. Olympia’s Hunter Sipe, presented with the game’s MVP award, scored 24 points with 13 rebounds, and scored 9 straight points in the first half that put the White squad up 70-47.

Tumwater’s Brian Marty added 20 points for the winners. Napavine’s Austin Filley, Winlock’s Wyatt Dean and Centralia’s Layne Pertzborn all added 14 points, and Pe Ell’s Kaelin Jurek chipped in 13.

The Blue squad, coached by Centralia’s Kyle Donahue, got 30 points from Washougal’s Collin Prangley and 25 from Mark Morris’ Will Burghardt.

“I think whoever’s gonna come out and hit the most 3s is gonna win,” Donahue said afterwards.

As the Tigers’ coach during the prep season, he’d seen plenty of Bailey’s penchant for long balls.

“It’s fun, but at the same time it’s frustrating, because I know I’ve watched him do it to other teams,” Donahue pointed out. “He’s got that little hesitation with the quick release on it, and it gets guys a little.”

Forks’ Parker Browning added 17 points for the Blue squad, while Joe Wallace chipped in 16 — including a thundering first-half dunk.

Napavine’s Wyatt Stanley added 6 points for the White team with a game-high 22 rebounds,

R.A. Long’s Coby Rothwell won the halftime 3-point shootout, dropping in 20 shots during the first one-minute period and topping himself with 21 in the finals. He edged out Bailey, who hit 18 in the first round and 20 in the second.
