2B Girls: Winlock Wards Off Mossyrock

WINLOCK — The Cardinals used a big third quarter to push past Mossyrock, 32-26, here Saturday in Central 2B League girls basketball action.

Maggie Howsden led Winlock with 10 points, and the Cards outscored their opponents 13-4 in a third quarter that saw Mossyrock move to a man-to-man defense.

“We got a lot of good drives by (guard Rianna) Whitehead,” Winlock coach Scott Ashmore said. “She pretty much was dumping it down to Howsden, who had some easy looks when she did.”

Clementine Schultz led Mossyrock with 12 points, and Paige Moorcroft added 7. Mike Hammond added 7 for Winlock.

Winlock (5-13, 4-12 league) plays at Adna on Tuesday. Mossyrock (2-16, 1-15 league) plays at Napavine on Tuesday.

Napavine Stays Hot, Drops MWP 68-32

MORTON — Morton-White Pass tried to counter Napavine’s size and speed by starting out in a zone defense.

The Tigers, however, literally shot that plan down.

Napavine went 6 of 8 behind the 3-point arc in the first quarter and rolled in a 68-32 win over MWP here Saturday night to improve to 15-1 in Central 2B League play.

“They were just on fire, so we bagged our zone and went man to man the rest of the game,” MWP coach Tom Griffith said. “Then you’re suffering with their tall, long and fast (players), but we did the best we could. They’re just a talented team.”

Melissa Lee led Napavine with 23 points and nine rebounds, and Grace Hamre chipped in 17. Mollie Olson added 13 points and 10 boards for the Tigers, who led 25-11 after a quarter.



Haley Kolb, Krystal Wright and Sharon Hazen each scored 7 for MWP.

Morton-White Pass (10-8, 8-8 overall) hosts Toutle Lake tonight in Randle and hosts Pe Ell in Morton on Thursday.

Napavine (16-2, 15-1 league) hosts Mossyrock tonight and plays at Winlock to close out the regular season on Thursday.

Note: Also on Saturday night, Toutle Lake beat Adna, 56-33, in Toutle, and Toledo beat Pe Ell, 53-34, in Pe Ell.

Ducks Blow Out Adna, 56-33

TOUTLE — The Pirates managed just 9 points in the first half here Saturday, falling 56-33 to Toutle Lake in Central 2B League girls hoops action.

“We didn’t play well at all,” Adna coach Chris Bannish said. “I was a little disappointed. We got our heads down a bit, and it’s the first time all year I’d say we didn’t step up and compete.”

Kenya Lorton led Adna with 12 points, and Shanay Dotson added 6. Sam Woodley led Toutle Lake with 15 points, while Makala Gardner tallied 12.

The Ducks went 6 of 15 from long range, but rebounding helped Toutle Lake run away with it, Bannish said.

“We allowed too many second-chance opportunities,” he said. “It was just not a good showing by us, and hopefully it’s a wakeup call.”

Adna (12-6, 11-5 league) hosts Winlock tonight and closes out the regular season at Toledo on Thursday.
