2B Girls: Lorton Leads Pirates Past Pe Ell

Posted

PE ELL — Kenya Lorton was on fire, and Adna rolled to a 67-19 Central 2B League girls basketball win over the Trojans here on Thursday.

Lorton hit 5 of her first 6 attempts from behind the arc, finishing with a school-record seven 3-pointers — on 10 attempts — and 23 points in three quarters of action.

“We came out, and our goal was to keep everything in front of us,” Pe Ell coach Chris Phelps said, “and Kenya, she was knocking them down.”

The Pirates, as a whole, were efficient from the floor, going 26 of 53 (49 percent) from the field and 10 of 21 from behind the arc, and leading 39-12 at halftime.

Lili Glover added 11 for Adna, while Shanay Dotson added 8 points.

“We were hoping they wouldn’t be as successful as they were on the perimeter, and they made us pay,” Phelps said. “Overall, (coach Chris) Bannish has got them very disciplined. Defensively, for us, we just lost players, and that’s a testament to their discipline, offensively.”

Sophomore Maggie Elliott played well defensively for the Trojans, Phelps added, and Savanah Skeen scored 5 with seven rebounds.

“We did the little things tonight. That was our focus, and we knew coming in that Adna’s a juggernaut,” Phelps said. “Our girls didn’t quit. They fought til the end, we attacked the basket, and we executed as best we could.”

Pe Ell (1-13, 1-11 league) will host Toutle Lake at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday in a girls-boys doubleheader. Adna (10-4, 9-3 league) will play at Napavine, in the late game of a co-ed twinbill, also on Saturday.

Note: Adna’s Isabella Elwood and Pe Ell’s Elliott received the game’s sportsmanship awards.

Lee, Tigers Put Away Ony 49-30

ONALASKA — The Loggers met their goal of holding Napavine under 50 points here Thursday night — and even managed an early 6-0 lead — but couldn’t muster enough offense in a 49-30 loss to the Central 2B League-leading Tiger girls.

Napavine outscored Onalaska 21-6 in the second quarter to take a 30-14 lead into the intermission.

“You tighten that up a little bit, and we’d be okay,” Logger coach Dracy McCoy said. “And I think we handled their press really well. That wasn’t really an issue, where it was the first time.”

Napavine beat the Loggers 55-25 back on Dec. 11. Melissa Lee led the Tigers with 22 points, while Grace Hamre chipped in 11.

Maddy Dalsted scored 2 points with four assists, three steals and three rebounds while playing with a high fever, McCoy pointed out, and Nicolle Duryea led the Loggers with 9 points.

Onalaska, however, shot just 1 of 13 from behind the 3-point arc.

Onalaska (6-8, 5-7 league) will host Winlock on Saturday in the 5:45 p.m. game of a girls-boys doubleheader. Napavine will host Adna on Saturday, with a 7 p.m. tipoff as the late game of a girls-boys doubleheader.

Toledo Sunk by Toutle Lake

TOUTLE — Toutle Lake scored over 70 points for the second straight game, notching a 77-25 Central 2B League victory behind 26 points from Sam Woodley here on Thursday. The Ducks led 41-14 after a half and controlled the glass throughout.

"We had good effort and worked hard but we just gave up way too many offensive rebounds and our transition defense was pretty poor," Toledo coach JB Ewers said. "They beat us down the floor for easy lay-ins and got multiple second-chance points."

Josie Bowen and Leilani Cline each had 6 points for the Indians.

"We knew with a team like Toutle it was going to be a tough challenge," Ewers said. "They shot the ball well and had too many second chance points."

Toledo (5-9, 4-8 league) plays at Morton-White Pass in Morton on Saturday.

Timberwolves Trim Vikings, 39-28

MOSSYROCK — Morton-White Pass bested Mossyrock with a 39-28 Central 2B League girls basketball win here on Thursday.

The Vikings stayed in contention, even cutting the lead down to 3 at one point during the third quarter before laying a goose egg in the final frame, cutting their rally attempt short.

"I felt like it was a very competitive game all the way throughout," Mossyrock coach Darin Bullock said. "We cut their lead down after halftime, but free throws ended up being the difference."

Haley Kolb led the Timberwolves with 13 points, while Sharon Hazen notched 11 points and 10 rebounds. MWP shot 21 percent from the field and went 12 of 19 from the free throw line.

Lainee Grose led Mossyrock with 12 points. Paige Moorcroft brought down 13 rebounds and scored 4 for the Vikings, who shot 25 percent from the floor and went just 1 of 4 from the charity stripe.

A positive element that Bullock was quick to point out was the improved effort on defense, reflected by the scoreboard compared to Mossyrock's previous meeting with the T-Wolves — a 71-42 loss on Dec. 11.

"We played outstanding defense tonight compared to last time we played them," Bullock said. "Neither teams shot very well, but that's a testament to how good the defense was."

Mossyrock (1-13, 0-12 league) will host Wahkiakum in a twinbill on Saturday, tipping off with the girls at 5:45 p.m. Morton-White Pass (8-4 league, 10-4 overall) will host Toledo in Morton on Saturday.
