2B Girls: Lorton, Dotson Lead Pirates Past Rainier

Posted

ADNA — Shanay Dotson and Kenya Lorton had big games, and Adna crushed Rainier, 59-28, here Tuesday in the first round of the District 4 2B Girls Basketball Tournament.

Lorton scored 20 with six rebounds, while Dotson added 19 with five boards.

The game was tied at 12 after a quarter, with the Pirates trailing 8-0 early on.

“After a timeout we went out and just started pressuring,” Adna coach Chris Bannish said. “Once we got that first basket to go, and were able to get into our pressure, they didn’t handle it very well.”

Adna, though, led 28-16 at halftime and exploded for 20 points in the third, with Dotson scoring 9.

“Dotson’s really been playing well down the stretch here,” Bannish said. “She’s getting healthy.”

Rainier also turned the ball over 27 times, with Lili Glover coming off the bench to snag five steals. That helped Adna attempt 74 field goals, while the Mountaineers managed just 38.

Peyton Dungan, a 6-foot-4 senior post, led Rainier with 12 points.

Adna (15-6) will take on Ilwaco on Saturday at a time to be determined.

Tigers Trump Chief Leschi

NAPAVINE — There’s been little that can slow down Central 2B League champion seed Napavine and the first round of the District 4 2B Girls Basketball Tournament was no exception. The Tigers jumped out to a 36-14 halftime lead and never looked back in a 69-36 victory over Pacific 2B League No. 8 seed Chief Leschi here on Tuesday.

Melissa Lee led Napavine with 24 points while Grace Hamre added 18 points.

“It was a good way to come out and get a good win,” Napavine coach Jeremy Landram said.

Napavine outscored Chief Leschi 22-10 in the third quarter. Mollie Olson added 11 points for the Tigers.

Napavine (18-2, 17-1 league) will play Morton-White Pass on Saturday, at a time and site to be determined.

Seagulls Swoop in for Win Over Toledo

RAYMOND — The Toledo offense chose an inopportune time to struggle as Raymond piled on the points in a 59-31 Indians loss in 2B District 4 crossover action here on Tuesday.

Haley Tauscher and Alyssa Ewers led the Indians with 9 points. Toledo only managed to break double-figure scoring in the fourth quarter, while the Seagulls outscored the Indians 39-18 in the first half to put things out of reach early.

"I thought we matched up fine with them," Toledo coach J.B. Ewers said. "We just couldn't put the ball in the basket. We got lots of good shots and they just wouldn't fall while Raymond shot very well."

At the epicenter of the efficient Raymond offense was Karlee Freeman. Freeman, who averaged just under 20 points per game in the regular season, scored a game-high 29 points for the Seagulls.

Another area where the Indians were outmatched was inside where the Seagulls bullied their opposition to get more rebounds and throw the defense off balance.

"They played way more physical and we kind of crumbled a bit under their physical pressure," Ewers said.

Toledo will now fight to stay alive in a loser-out affair against Ocosta at Rochester High School on Friday, scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. tip.

"We just need to let this one go and get over it," Ewers said. "We need to get back to what we were doing well two weeks ago. Friday will be a new day."

Loggers Survive OT to Clip Eagles, 53-51

TACOMA — Despite a size and home court disadvantage, Onalaska managed to get the job done, edging Life Christian Academy 53-51 in overtime here in a District 4 2B Girls Basketball Tournament matchup on Tuesday.

The Loggers' main opposition came in the form of posts Courtney Youngblood and Alyssa Donaldson, who made it a long night on the glass for Onalaska.

"We had some difficulties rebounding on both ends against them," Onalaska coach Dracy McCoy said. "They had quite a few putbacks."

Donaldson scored 11 points while Youngblood put up a team-high of 15 points along with Alea Yun.

Nicolle Duryea led the Lady Loggers in their effort, scoring 22 points and snagging seven rebounds. Duryea, as well as Ronnie Kinsman, hit some key 3-pointers down the stretch, including a game-tying trey from Duryea to force overtime.

"Ronnie and Nicolle came out and hit clutch 3s for us," McCoy said. "All of the girls just played with a lot of pride and effort tonight."

While the two senior guards dominated the scoring sheet, Maddy Dalsted was making plays, tallying 10 assists and three steals to go along with her 4 points. Onalaska went 9 of 14 from the free throw line, but, fortunately, the made buckets came at opportune times down the stretch to allow the Loggers to hang on for the win.

In her two-year tenure thus far, this was the greatest effort that McCoy has seen to date, and it couldn't have came at a better time.

"This was the hardest I've seen them play in my two years of coaching," McCoy said. "I couldn't be prouder of the girls."

The Lady Loggers will need all the effort they can muster as they will face a lethal Toutle Lake squad on Saturday, with the location yet to be determined.

Dotson, MWP Put Away Tacoma Baptist

TACOMA — Sierra Dotson had a monster game on the glass, and Morton-White Pass held off Tacoma Baptist here Tuesday, 43-34, in the first round of the District 4 2B Girls Basketball Tournament.

Dotson scored 6 points and hauled in 19 of the Timberwolves’ 40 rebounds.

“She absolutely dominated the boards, which is a change for her,” MWP coach Tom Griffith said. “She’s 5-foot-10 — fairly tall — but not a brute, build-wise. She just really did a great job tonight, on both ends of the floor.”

Center Christine Robbins, meanwhile, led MWP with 15 points.

“We really wanted to emphasize, the last couple games, the inside-out — get Christine a look inside first,” Griffith said. “It’s really worked out for us pretty well.”

Haley Kolb and Krystal Wright each added 7 points for MWP, with Sharon Hazen chipping in 6.

Morton-White Pass (12-9) will take on Napavine on Saturday in the district quarterfinals, at a time and location to be determined.

Fishermen Dismantle Cards, 63-14

ILWACO — The Fishermen dominated the Pacific 2B League with a 10-0 record. They showed Winlock just how dominant they can be with a 63-14 win here in District 4 girls basketball crossover action on Tuesday.

In the first quarter alone, Ilwaco outscored an entire game's worth of production for the Cardinals. A 30-2 first frame had spelled doom for Winlock before they had even reached halftime. The Fishermen followed it up with a 20-6 second quarter to hold a remarkable 50-8 lead at the break.

"We watched a bit of film on them, but they were far better than what we watched. They came out on fire in the first half," Winlock coach Scott Ashmore said. "We got enough shots off in the first half, but we didn't hit anything."

At the end of the night, the Cardinals had hit just 6 of 42 shots from the field (14 percent) while Ilwaco shot just over 50 percent from the floor. Makenzie Kaech led the Fishermen with 19 points and Hannah Ellsworth added 15.

Jazmin Ramirez led Winlock with 8 points, earning praise from Ashmore.

"The girls were nervous, scared and excited and it really showed," Ashmore said. "But Ilwaco really has everything you need, shooters and post people that can really play. They're good."

Winlock will travel to Montesano on Friday for a loser-out affair against Rainier, slated for a 6:30 p.m. tip.
