ROCHESTER — Kal Schaplow scored a game-high 17 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and Toledo secured itself a regional berth with a 38-25 victory over Ilwaco in the District 4 consolation semifinals Thursday.

Instead of battling it out for the fifth and final regional spot, the Indians have secured their regional bid and will now face off against Central 2B foe Adna in the third/fourth place match at 1 p.m., Saturday, at W.F. West High School.

Currently ranked No. 6 in the WIAA RPI, which is used for state seeding, Toledo needs to remain in the top-8 and win its regional game to earn a first-round bye at state. The Indians are seeking their first state berth since 2010.

“These girls have worked really hard for this,” Toledo coach Brian Layton said. “They do all the work.”

Toledo (21-3), the Central 2B League champion, was upset by Mossyrock in its district opener on Feb. 15, then had to claw its way back to earn a regional berth, beating Toutle Lake and Raymond before reaching Ilwaco on Thursday.

It was looking worrisome early on as the Indians fell behind 11-5 after one quarter. Then the Indians caught fire, ripping off a 12-0 run to take an 18-13 lead at the break, a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

“We settled down, attacked more and got transition buckets,” Layton said.

Toledo held Pacific 2B League champion Ilwaco (20-3) to single-digit scoring in the final three quarters. Fishermen star Erika Glenn, last season’s 2B Pacific MVP, was held to just 10 points on the night.

“She’s a really good basketball player,” Layton said. “Those were 10 hard-earned points.”

Toledo’s defense made up for its struggles on offense as the Indians were just 13 of 51 from the field (26 percent) and 9 of 23 from the charity stripe (391). Luckily, the Fishermen struggled putting the ball in the basket even more, hitting just 11 of 47 shots (23 percent), including 3 of 12 from the free throw line (25 percent).

Toledo narrowly won the rebounding battle, 33-32, led by junior Stacie Spahr’s game-high of 16 and Schaplow’s 10.

“We rebounded well, not great, but better than we have been lately,” Layton said.

The Indians will look to keep their hot streak going against Adna (21-4) Saturday. A win over the Pirates would most certainly keep them in the top-8 in RPI seeding and give them a double-bye into state.
