2B Boys Basketball: Whitehead Drops 30 to Help Loggers Fend Off MWP

ONALASKA — Carter Whitehead scored 30 points and it was just enough to put the Loggers over the top against Morton-White Pass on Saturday in a non-league boys basketball affair.

Onalaska jumped out to a 21-11 lead after one quarter and then spent the rest of the contest holding off a long slow comeback attempt by the Timberwolves.

“I’m thinking the same old, same old. We’ve had leads like that the last four games,” noted Onalaska coach Wayne Nelson. “The second half was pretty close. We got up eight a couple of times but never over double digits.”

The Loggers connected on 9 of 12 attempts from downtown and Whitehead knocked down five of his six three-point attempts on the way to his game-high scoring mark. Ashton Haight was Onalaska’s second leading scorer with a baker’s dozen points.

“Ashton Haight played really well tonight. Not only did he have 13 points but he had three charges taken. I thought it was his best game of the year,” noted Nelson.

Josh Salguero led MWP with 16 points. Carter Dantinne added 10 points while Hayden Young and Gary Dotson were held to just four points each.

“We just played man-to-man defense,” said Nelson. “Their guards penetrated and dumped the ball off to their post quite a bit so those guys didn’t get as many looks.”

Onalaska (8-1, 3-1 league) will play at Wahkiakum on Monday.

Morton-White Pass (6-7, 2-1 league) will play at Toledo on Wednesday.
