2B Boys: Balanced Pirates Topple Ony

Posted

ADNA — The Pirates overcame a slow start to put away Onalaska, 42-34, here Wednesday night in Central 2B League boys basketball action.

Onalaska led 12-5 after a quarter.

“We just missed a lot of shots in the first quarter, and they executed well,” Adna coach Luke Salme said. “We came out in a zone and they executed and got good shots in the post.”

The Pirates, though, put together a series of seven straight defensive stops in the second quarter, and were able to take an 18-16 lead into the break.

Tanner Rigdon led Adna with 10 points, while Isaac Ingle added 9.

Jacob Modica paced the Loggers with 15 points.

“It’s a grind against Ony. They’re so good defensively, and so disciplined, that you’ve just got to keep grinding them for four quarters,” Salme said.

The Pirates went just 6 of 19 from the foul line in the win.

Adna (7-6, 6-5 league) will host Pe Ell on Friday, and will play at Napavine on Saturday with a 5:45 p.m. start as the first game in a boys-girls doubleheader.

Onalaska (3-10, 2-9 league) will host Napavine on Friday.

Wallace, Indians Avenge Earlier Loss to Napavine

TOLEDO — Joe Wallace came up big and Toledo got a bit of revenge here Wednesday night with a 52-41 C2BL boys hoops win over Napavine.

The No. 8-ranked Tigers had beaten Toledo 50-43 on Jan. 9, after trailing by 10 at halftime.

Toledo led by 5 at halftime on Wednesday.

“We were saying, ‘We’ve been here before. We’ve done our job, but it’s for nothing if we don’t show up in the second half,” Toledo coach Grady Fallon said. “Not that it was a barnburner, but we didn’t go backwards, and that was an improvement.”

Wallace scored 18 points with three steals and grabbed a season-high 12 rebounds while holding Tiger leading scorer Wyatt Stanley to 10 points.

“Stanley had 22 against us the first time, and he wanted to guard him,” Fallon said. “He took a little pride in his defense tonight.”

Reece Wallace added 14 points for Toledo, Junior Arroyo grabbed 12 rebounds and Jared Pohll scored 10 points.

Toledo scored a few lay-ups against Napavine’s press — and went 11 of 15 at the foul line — in the fourth quarter to hold on for the win.

Austin Filley led Napavine with 14 points, though the Tigers were just 2 of 16 from long range.

“After we lost to them last time, I think it left a little sore spot,” Fallon said. “We had a couple of good practices, and I think guys are figuring out their roles a little bit.”

Toledo (10-3, 9-2 league) will host Toutle Lake on Friday, and will play Morton-White Pass in Morton on Saturday in the late game of a boys-girls doubleheader.

Napavine (10-3, 8-3 league) will play at Onalaska on Friday and will host Adna on Saturday in the first game of a boys-girls doubleheader.

Pe Ell Survives Shootout With Wahkiakum

PE ELL — What started as a rout turned into a shootout as Pe Ell was able to outlast Central 2B League foe Wahkiakum 73-64 here on Wednesday. The Trojans were hitting on all cylinders and cruised to 41-19 halftime lead but the Mules awoken in the fourth quarter to score 31 points.

“It seemed like they would just turnaround in the fourth quarter, shoot it and the sucker would go in,” Pe Ell coach Justin Phelps said. “Things tightened up and we had to go into our two-minute drill. We just finished up with the necessary free throws down the stretch.”

Dustin Lusk finished with 20 points for the Trojans while Tyler Shepherd had 19 points.

“We could hardly miss in the first half,” Phelps said. “This was the best execution I had seen all season. We were running up and down the floor with lots of intensity.”

The Mules won the fourth quarter, 31-21.

“They were rebounding all over the place,” Phelps said. “Hats off to Zach Brown (who scored 22 points). He’s a great kid that’s fun to watch.”

Pe Ell’s Red Arrington had a double-double the hard way, scoring 4 points but adding 11 rebounds and 10 assists to go along with five steals.

“He did a lot for us,” Phelps said.

Pe Ell (8-12, 4-7 league) plays at Adna on Friday.

Timberwolves Sprint Past Cardinals

WINLOCK — The Cardinals got off to a slow start and against No. 3-ranked Morton-White Pass and that proved to be too much to overcome in a 67-37 loss to the Timberwolves here on Wednesday night.

Morton-White Pass led 18-3 after the first quarter and had the 46-17 advantage at halftime. Gage LaClef led the Timberwolves with 16 points and Cameron Hart had 14 points.

“Their pressure really bothered us but I thought we really competed on the glass and competed hard in the second quarter,” Winlock coach Nick Bamer said.

Nick Patching led the Cardinals with 10 points and Dawson Hall added 9 points. Adair Garibay led the team in rebounds with seven.

“We kind of came out flat in that game,” Bamer said. “I think not having the band there hurt us, energy-wise.”

Bamer did like the performance of guards Garibay and Patching, saying the two had to deal with the brunt of MWP’s pressure.

“They handled the defense well and MWP generally makes life miserable for everybody,” he said.

Winlock (4-9, 3-8 league) plays at Wahkiakum on Friday, while Morton-White Pass will host Mossyrock (10-4, 8-4 league) in Randle the same night.

Kirkley Returns, Comes Up Clutch for Vikings in 70-60 Win Over Toutle

TOUTLE — It was Jaron Kirkley's first game back from injury, and it couldn't have came at a better time.

Kirkley was clutch, knocking down a key 3-pointer in the fourth quarter before hitting 11 free throws to seal a 70-60 Mossyrock win over Toutle Lake here in Central 2B League boys hoops action on Wednesday.

The Vikings didn't start as well as they finished, trailing 27-23 at intermission.

"We came out of the locker room at halftime and decided we were going to make a statement," Mossyrock coach Kelly Ross said. "That first half wasn't us and our game, so we came out with fire and intensity."

The statement came particularly at the charity stripe, where the Vikings went a remarkable 22 of 24 on the night. Mossyrock outscored the Ducks 23-14 to capture the lead in the third quarter.

Toutle Lake wasn't finished, rallying back and, at one point, taking the lead before a key Kirkley 3-pointer knotted it up. Mossyrock went 13/13 from the free throw line in the final frame.

"They fouled us and Jaron had the ball basically every time," Ross said. "It was pretty awesome to see our guys making free throws confidently and consistently."

Kirkley finished with 21 points and eight rebounds, while Bo Miles and Danny Nelson scored 16 points apiece.

Cam Swanson led Toutle Lake with 18 points.

Mossyrock (9-4, 7-4 league) will travel to Randle to face Morton-White Pass on Friday.
