2B Baseball Roundup: Brown’s Walk-Off Homer Leads Mules Past Adna

CATHLAMET — Luke Brown came up big, and the Mules stayed perfect in Central 2B League play here Thursday afternoon.

Adna was up 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning, when Brown hit a two-run homer to give Wahkiakum a walk-off victory.

“It was an unbelievable high school baseball game,” Adna coach Jon Rooklidge said. “Clean, great pitching, both teams playing great defense and throwing strikes.”

Sawyer Burdick had two doubles and started on the mound for the Pirates, who trailed 1-0 in the top of the seventh inning. Burdick started the frame with a double, and shortly thereafter Abel Ingle singled to score Burdick and tie things up.

The Mules were unable to end things in the bottom of the seventh, and things progressed from there, until Burdick started the ninth inning off the a double. A sacrifice bunt, a walk and an errant pick-off play later Burdick crossed home plate to put the Pirates up 2-1.

James Anderson started before giving way to Brown on the mound, with the duo striking out 15 Pirates and holding Adna to five hits.

“The big difference was we stranded five runners in scoring position,” Rooklidge said. “Their pitching is lights-out fantastic. It’s hard to prepare for their pitching, it’s that good. We were right there and had a chance to win.”

Adna (5-2, 5-1) travels to White Salmon on Saturday to face the Bruins in a nonleague game.

Titans Roll Past Vikings

MOSSYROCK — Pe Ell-Willapa Valley scored seven runs in the first inning and never looked back, defeating Mossyrock 13-3 in five innings in a Central 2B League baseball game here Thursday.

Cub Bair pitched all five innings for the Titans and added a double at the plate. Luke Gerow had a double, Tyson Nissell had two hits including a triple and Donnie Ward added a double. Ryon Ashley added two hits for PWV.

Kord Senter had a hit and an RBI for the Vikings.

“He’s been the hard-luck guy this year,” Mossyrock coach Jay Henderson said of Senter. “He’s hit the ball hard all year and ends up getting one hit.”

The Titans’ first four batters of the game reached base on either a hit batter or a walk, and PWV took advantage early on.

“You’ve got to throw strikes. When you start off a ballgame with three hit batters and a walk in your first four hitters, that’s tough to bounce back from,” Henderson said. “After the first inning, it’s a 6-3 game, and a pretty solid effort for us.”

The Vikings, Henderson noted, were struck out only three times in the loss.

Mossyrock (0-5, 0-5) travels to Onalaska on Friday for a 2 p.m. league game, while PWV (3-4, 3-3) plays next on Friday, April 6, hosting Naselle in a nonleague game.

Kalama Shuts Down MWP

KALAMA — Tommy Brandenburg held the Timberwolves to one hit over six innings as Kalama picked up a 10-0 Central 2B League baseball win here Thursday.

Tyler Brown had Morton-White Pass’ lone hit, and struck out four over the first three innings on the mound.

The Timberwolves committed three errors in the loss, and Kalama (5-3) had 10 hits.

“We’ve been playing pretty good defense all year, and tonight, for some reason, it didn’t work out well for us,” MWP coach Lee Metcalf said. “They’re a good-hitting team. Eventually they’re going to make you pay if you don’t put pressure on them offensively.”

Morton-White Pass (3-2, all league games) hosts Toledo in Randle at 2 p.m. on Friday.

Vetter, Ducks Stop Napavine

TOUTLE — The Tigers couldn’t get much going here Thursday, falling 8-0 to Toutle Lake in Central 2B League baseball action.

Zach Vetter tossed a complete game for the Ducks, striking out nine and walking one with two hits. The senior pitcher retired the first 11 batters he saw before Seth Butler hit a double.

Ben Woodrum hit a one-out single in the seventh inning for the Tigers’ second hit.

Austin Sweet went 3 for 3 with a double for Toutle Lake (4-3, 4-2 league).

Napavine (4-4, 3-2 league) plays at Kalama on Friday.

Toledo Splits Twinbill With Ony, Rainier

TOLEDO — The Indians blanked Onalaska, 2-0, to get their first win of the season, but lost 9-3 to Rainier to split a pair of Central 2B League baseball games here Thursday afternoon.

Freshman Ryan Bloomstrom started for Toledo against Onalaska and worked three innings, scattering three singles and walking two. Kyle Bauter closed out the game, striking out four and giving up one hit.

“I was pretty pleased, for the most part, with our play in that first game, and certainly with the pitching,” Toledo coach Jeff Davis said. “We’ve been in all our ballgames, despite some scores, and either had the lead of been tied through five (innings). For them to just keep playing hard was a real good thing, and a test of their character.”

Bauter doubled and scored on a double from Tommy Kinsman in the fourth inning to give Toledo the lead, and Gannon Madill hit an RBI single in the fifth inning and went 2 for 3 for the Indians.

Bauter also finished with two hits.

A.J. Volk had two hits for Onalaska. Matt Kurzeika pitched all six innings for the Loggers, striking out four without walking a batter.

Rainier opened up a 6-1 lead after two innings and cruised to victory in the Indians’ nightcap, with two hits each from Jeff Ashby, Ricky Cruse and Trevin Pericic. Cruse started and pitched into the sixth inning, allowing seven hits and three runs to get the win.

Bauter, Cody Towns and Matt Stavig each had two hits for Toledo, and freshman Kaden Sellards added an RBI double.

Toledo (1-5, 1-4 league) plays Morton-White Pass in Randle at 2 p.m. on Friday. Onalaska (1-4) is off until April 10, when the Loggers host Rainier in a doubleheader.
