TACOMA — What’s better than a trip to the Tacoma Dome?

Another trip to the Tacoma Dome.

Adna’s (12-0) defense clamped down and the offense found its groove in the second half of a 25-11 win over Tacoma Baptist (12-1) here Saturday in the State 2B Football Tournament semifinals. The Pirates will return to the City of Destiny Saturday to take on Colfax — 19-0 semifinal winners over Desales — at 4 p.m.

After a scoreless first quarter, Pirate quarterback Kyle Grosshans passed out of his own end zone and, with the ensuing intentional grounding call, Adna was hit with a safety to give the Crusaders a 2-0 lead. The Pirates answered with their first touchdown, a 50-yard pass from Grosshans to Anthony Tatum, which came two plays after a Pirate touchdown was called back on a hold.

Tacoma scored again before halftime on a 31-yard field goal from Riley Snider.

In the second half, though, the Pirates spread the field and hit their stride. Grosshans hit Tatum on a swing pass, and the receiver cut upfield 43 yards to paydirt. Just eight seconds later, on the Crusaders’ first play following the kickoff, Tatum scooped up a fumble and ran 28 yards back to the end zone to put Adna up 19-5.

Grosshans scored from 58 yards out on a keeper a few seconds into the fourth and, by the time Tacoma Baptist answered with a 21-yard TD pass from quarterback Griffin Lowe to Kyle Delegard, the outcome was already decided.

It was the first time an Adna football team has ever won a game in the Tacoma Dome, and the farthest a Pirate team has made it since 1989, when Adna beat Columbia 42-13 in the state title game in the Kingdome.

Welcome to the discussion.
