1A Girls Tennis: Tenino Qualifies Two for State

VANCOUVER — The Beavers punched a pair of tickets to the state tournament here Friday during the District 4 1A Girls Tennis Tournament.

Tenino doubles squad Erin Engebreth and Natalie Hall took first, while Ali-Jo Vens finished second in the singles bracket to put two Tenino entries in the State 1B/2B/1A Girls Tennis Tournament, as well as giving Tenino the District 4 championship.

Engebreth and Hall beat Castle Rock’s Tiffany Tomlin and Elise Martinez, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round. The duo then beat Montesano’s Ali McHatten and Hunter Hancock 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals before downing Montesano’s Katie Ayres and Elizabeth Taborski, 6-2, 6-3, in the district championship.



Vens, meanwhile, beat White Salmon’s Jasmine Montero 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, and topped Castle Rock’s Haley Keeling 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals before losing a tight 6-3, 5-7, 6-0 contest to King’s Way Christian’s Jasmine Nesbitt in the title match.

The State 1B/2B/1A Girls Tennis Tournament will start Friday at the Yakima Tennis Center. Vens will face Rosie Melville, from Lind-Ritzville/Sprague, in the first round, while Engebreth and Hall will take on Sydney and Abby Spray, of Riverside, in their opener on Friday morning.
