MONTESANO — The Warriors picked up their first win of the season here Friday night, warding off Elma 18-14 in 1A Evergreen Division football action.

Wyatt Singer ran for 236 yards and three touchdowns to lead Rochester.

"Elma came out and they were prepared,” Rochester coach Eric Snelson said. “They played hard and they got us a couple times.”

The Warriors didn’t help their own cause, however, with five lost fumbles. The defense, though, recorded four sacks, and Juan Jimenez picked off a pass in the fourth quarter that led to Rochester’s game-winning scoring drive.

Elma led 7-0 after a quarter, and held a 14-12 lead going into the final frame.

“We just have to work on hanging onto the ball,” Snelson said. “Guys are trying to look at routes and do positive things but you've got to hang on to the ball first and foremost."

Rochester (1-2, 1-0 league) will host Forks on Friday.

Note: The game was played at Montesano, as Elma is without home football facilities.
