Prep Girls Soccer: Tigers Defeat Toledo, 5-2

Posted

TOLEDO — Napavine coach Henry Gallanger and Toledo coach Horst Malunat are no strangers — they're both coaches for the Toledo-Winlock boys soccer team — but here on Tuesday night they were rival coaches in a Central 2B League soccer matchup. In the end, the more experienced Tigers came away with a 5-2 victory thanks to three goals from midfielder Sage Atkins and two goals from Grace Hamre.

"It was a pretty electric 10-15 minutes to begin the game and both teams were hyped and excited," Gallanger said. "It was a great atmosphere and it was stressful but my girls did some in-game adjustments and by the second half, they were firing on all cylinders."

Toledo scored quickly as Courtney Moore notched a goal in the second minute thanks to a Hannah Ethridge assist. Napavine speedster Hamre used a Kenya Lorton assist for a goal in the sixth minute, and did the same thing in the seventh minute for a 2-1 lead.

Toledo's Amya Thomasson tied the game up against with an unassisted goal in the 11th minute and that's how things would stay until Atkins sniped a goal in the 38th minute for the 3-2 halftime lead.

"You can't say soccer is low scoring — at least tonight," Malunat said. "There was a barrage of scoring and it was kind of cool."

Atkins wasn't done as she notched goals after the break in the 44th and 46th minute to put the game on ice.

"It was a case of experience," Malunat said. "Henry has some good, experience players. I think our players are finding out it can be a pretty physical game in high school."

Napavine finished with 16 of 23 shots on frame, while Toledo had 13 shots on frame. The Tigers (3-1) now have 15 goals on the young season and play Life Christian on Thursday at home. Toledo (1-1) will play at Onalaska on Thursday.

Late Rally Not Enough for Bearcats Against SC

SEATTLE — W.F. West made a run in the second half but couldn’t overcome an early deficit in a 3-2 loss to Seattle Christian here Tuesday afternoon in nonleague girls soccer action.

The host Warriors led 3-0 at halftime, but Anna Russell scored on a free kick and then knocked in a shot from outside the 18-yard line for the Bearcats after the intermission.

“They have a good team, but we dug ourselves a hole and made ourselves look like we weren’t ready to go,” W.F. West coach Tino Sanchez said. “We could have had another goal, but unfortunately time ran out. But it was fun. It made me feel good, the second half.”

Samantha Turner, McKenna Moon and Hannah Tak all played well, Sanchez added, along with Maddi Baker, Kassidy Grandorff and Megan Wilks.

W.F. West (1-3) will host Washougal in a nonleague game on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Note: The Bearcats lost 5-0 to Olympia, a State 4A semifinalist last season, on Saturday.

Rochester Shuts Out Rival Tenino

TENINO — Rochester’s defense kept the Beavers in check here Tuesday night in a 4-0 1A Evergreen Division girls soccer victory.

Joni Lancaster opened the scoring in the 10th minute, and Alex Seymour scored on an Esmerelda Caprio assist 10 minutes later. Lilly Grubbs’ goal in the 34th minute put Rochester up 3-0 at the intermission, and Lancaster assisted Quinn McFadded on a goal in the 54th minute to round out the scoring.

“The defense was solid. We didn’t give up anything in the back, which was my main goal for tonight,” Rochester coach John Hayes said. “Overall, they played well.”

Tenino coach Chad Thomas credited his defense, which was working in a new formation.

“We’re working through something new, and I thought the defense did a really good job today,” he said. “It was a good game. A physical game, and a lot of fun to watch.”

Rochester (2-0) will host Hoquiam on Thursday. Tenino (1-1-1) will host Montesano on Thursday.

Winlock Drops Match to Life Christian

WINLOCK — With plenty of Lewis County teams making their debut in the new Central 2B League, relative newcomer Life Christian Academy showed it’ll be a force as well with the Tacoma private school picking up an 8-0 victory over Winlock here on Tuesday.

The Cardinals trailed 5-0 at halftime before coach Kevin Schultz challenged his team to be more aggressive. Schultz said he liked the way his girls responded in the second half.

"They were a really good team and we're a first year program going up against an experienced program," he said.

Schultz added he liked the play of eighth grade Cheledna Squibb, who picked up 11 saves in goal after the Cardinals' starting keeper was injured.

Winlock (0-4) will host Ocosta on Thursday.
