2B Softball: Adna, Napavine, PWV All in Saturday's Semifinals

Posted

YAKIMA — The Central 2B League sent five teams to the State 2B Softball Tournament and, in what should come as no surprise given the league's dominance on a statewide level, still has four of those teams vying for the title.

Adna will face first-year combination program Pe Ell-Willapa Valley, and Napavine will take on defending state champion Toutle Lake in today's State 2B semifinals. Both games are slated to start at noon here at Gateway Sports Complex.

The Central 2B League contingent combined to outscore the rest of the state by a whopping 73-15 margin in the first round, and the closest contest of the quarterfinals was Napavine's 13-9 victory over Morton-White Pass.

The Timberwolves will play a loser-out contest against Kittitas at 10 a.m. this morning, and will need three wins today to reach the third/fourth place game.

Here's a game-by-game recap of Friday's action.

Quarterfinals

PWV 10, Colfax 6

The Titans scored 4 runs in the fifth inning to take command of their quarterfinal matchup against Colfax and posting a 10-6 victory.

Sidney Pollard posted two singles, Sam Woodward had a single and a double, and winning pitcher Dakota Brooks helped her own cause with three hits.

Abby Hodel added a triple and PWV tallied had 11 hits as a team.

Colfax led 4-2 after two innings but the Titans added 3 runs in the second and another in the fourth. Brooks struck out eight in the win.

Adna 10, Dayton 0

Adna scored 6 runs in the first inning and was off to the races against Dayton in the quarterfinals. After that initial outburst, Cheyenne Gilbertson’s home run in the second inning helped finish Dayton off in a 13-0 victory.

Samantha Rolfe and Jenikka Poppe combined to allow just two hits against Dayton. Gilbertson finished with two hits, while Katelyn Pine added two hits and a triple to go along with Josey Sandrini’s triple.

Napavine 13, MWP 9

YAKIMA — The Tigers got work done early, and that work managed to withstand a late push from Morton-White Pass in a 13-9 quarterfinal win.

Erika Potter led the Tigers on the offensive end, going 4 for 5 with two doubles and an RBI. The Tigers connected on 16 hits and committed two errors, with help from five miscues by MWP.

Trouble began to brew in the bottom of the fifth inning when a 10-run mercy rule seemed likely to put MWP, in a 13-2 deficit, away early. The Timberwolves mounted some offense to stay alive, capitalizing on a relief of pressure and a variety of miscues on the part of Napavine to plate 2 runs and avoid the premature ending.

Christine Robbins hit a 2-run homer for MWP in the seventh inning, but Napavine’s early 9-0 lead was too much for MWP to overcome.

Abbi Music worked all seven innings and fanned 11 for Napavine.

First Round

PWV 11, Friday Harbor 2

YAKIMA — Pe Ell-Willapa Valley littered runs throughout the ballgame and stifled the opposition early on to seal a 11-2 win over Friday Harbor in the first round of the 2B Softball State Championships on Friday.

At the root of the Titans’ success was ace Dakota Brooks. Going the distance, Brooks struck out eight while allowing four hits and walking three.

Brooks did the most damage from the plate, going 3 for 4 with a ground rule double and 4 RBIs via a pair of 2-run homers in consecutive at-bats in the fourth and sixth innings.

Adna 21, Liberty Bell 0

The Pirates made short work of their first opponent here Friday morning, downing Liberty Bell 21-0 in five innings.

Josey Sandrini went 3 for 3 with 3 runs and two triples. Kendra Stajduhar and Cheyenne Gilbertson both went 3 for 4 for the Lady Pirates.

Napavine 18, NWC 6

Sage Atkins was the catalyst for the Tiger offense as Napavine thrashed Northwest Christian, 18-6 in six innings, in the first round on Friday.

Atkins knocked a 3-run homer in the first and a 2-run shot in the third, and added two doubles.

Erika Potter went 3 for 4 with a triple and an RBI for the Tigers.

MWP 4, Warden 3 (8 inn.)

Kylie Allen had three hits, including the one that mattered most in Morton-White Pass’ 4-3 victory over Warden in first round.

Allen stroked a double in the eighth inning that drove in the game-winning run, and the Timberwolves held on in the bottom of the frame.

Christine Robbins went the distance for Morton-White Pass, striking out 13.

Morton-White Pass kept the game going with 2 runs in the sixth, thanks to a 2-run double from Allen.
