2B Track: Gaffney Wraps Prep Career With Three Wins

CHENEY — The end of Adna senior Regyn Gaffney’s prep track career went exactly as planned here Saturday during the State 2B Track & Field Championships at Eastern Washington University.

Gaffney won the state championship in the 100 meters for the fourth time, crossing the finish line in 12.46 seconds. She was the only runner to crack 13 seconds; Dayton’s Kaitlyn Andrews was second in 13.14 seconds.

Gaffney also won the 400 by over 2 seconds at 57.01, repeating her championship in that event, with Reardan’s Harley Strope placing second in 59.15 seconds.

The senior wrapped up her slate of solo events with a win in the 200 meters on Saturday, crossing the line in 25.82 seconds to defend her state title. Colfax junior Scout Cai took second in 26.52 seconds.

Adna’s 4x200 girls relay team finished second, with Gaffney anchoring a team with Emma Manning, Karissa Callahan and Amber Langworthy. The Pirates ran a school-record 1:49.77, coming in second by less than a second to Lind-Ritzville (1:46.99), and Gaffney’s three wins helped the Pirates finish sixth in the final 2B girls team standings.

Here’s the rest of the highlights from the State 2B championships:

Toledo’s Daniel Echtle won the 110-meter hurdles, edging out Raymond’s Jayce Freeman for first place. Echtle crossed the finish line in 15.73 seconds, while Freeman came in second at 15.87. Echtle also took third in the 300 hurdles, in 41.44 seconds; Pe Ell’s Tyler Justice was eighth in the event, in 43.10 seconds.

Morton-White Pass’ Ian Louderback won the javelin, with a throw of an even 186 feet on the last of his six attempts. Davenport’s Austin Zeller was second (179-10), and Mossyrock’s Logan Gootgeld finished third at 169-05.

Pe Ell’s Josh Schulz was third in the boys 200 meters, finishing in 23.50 seconds. Raymond’s Jayce Newman won the event in 23.19 seconds, and Morton-White Pass’ Thomas Sniezak was seventh in 24.10.

Onalaska’s Evan Wrzesinksi took seventh in the 100 meters. The junior won the event last year, and crossed the finish line in 11.88 seconds.

Mossyrock junior Jess White took seventh in the 400 meters, in 53.18 seconds, and ran a leg of the Vikings’ 4x400 relay — which finished fifth, in a school-record 3:32.25. Levi Munoz, Lucas Johnson and Justin Gootgeld — a sophomore and two freshmen, respectively — also ran legs of the relay.

Morton-White Pass’ Zach Elswick took second in the boys triple jump, with a makr of 42 feet, 5 inches. Okanogan’s Mason Guerrette was first at 42-10.25.

Napavine’s Jacob Johnston finished sixth in the shot put, notching a best throw of 147 feet, 7 inches. MWP’s Ian Louderback was eighth, at 143-3, and North Beach’s Caleb Bridge won the event by over 13 feet at 185-07 and set a 2B meet record by over 12 feet.



Napavine freshman Mollie Olson took third in the 100-meter hurdles, in 16.44 seconds, and finished fifth in the 300 hurdles, in 48.59 seconds.

Mossyrock’s Alicia Herrera finished eighth in the 1600 meters, crossing the line in 5 minutes, 28 seconds. St. George’s Madison Ward won the event in 5:04.

Morton-White Pass’ Kenzie Anderson finished fourth in the girls 800 meters, clocking in at 2:23.00, less than 5 seconds behind winner Madison Ward of St. George’s (2:18.38). She also finished third in the long jump at 16 feet, 5.5 inches, just 3.5 inches behind winner Rose Walts of Tonasket.

Adna’s Isabella Elwood finished sixth in the high jump at 4 feet, 10 inches. Colfax’s Scout Cai won the event at 5-04.

Toledo’s Josie Bowen finished sixth in the shot put, at 34 feet, 10.5 inches.

CHENEY — Tenino’s Jonathon Jonesnewman finished seventh in the shot put on Saturday in the State 1A track championships. Jonesnewman, a senior, uncorked his best toss of 47 feet, 3.5 inches on his third attempt. Eatonville’s Justin Kaelin won the shot put with a toss of 57 feet, 11.5 inches.

Tenino’s Taylor Tibbetts was eighth in the discus, with a throw of 114 feet, 8 inches. Montesano sophomore Jordan Spradlin won the event at 146 feet, 10 inches.

TACOMA — Centralia’s Aaron Pullin and W.F. West’s Emma Moon wrapped up the Twin Cities’ representation at the State 2A Track & Field Championships here on Saturday.

Pullin finished seventh in the 200 meters, crossing the finish line in 22.69 seconds. River Ridge’s Dejuan won the event in 21.75 seconds.

Moon, a freshman, took 14th in the 3200 meters on Saturday, in 11:55.68.

"I was very proud of the maturity and tenacity Emma demonstrated in her race today,” W.F. West coach Autumn Ledgerwood said. “She had to battle for position and still responded with a solid time, just 5 seconds off her personal best."
