1B Boys Basketball: Acorns Hold Off Taholah

Posted

OAKVILLE — Two holdovers from the old Coastal Conference got together for an old fashioned shootout here Thursday night as the Acorns downed the Chitwhins 56-50 in 1B boys hoops action.

"They're a great team," said Oakville coach Cliff Harris. "They have three excellent players, and we were able to shut everybody else down and just allow those guys to score."

Harris was not suffering from a bout of cold-induced hyperbole, either. Keanu Curleybear, Jimmy Smith-Kramer, and Wade Purdy were the only Taholah players to net any points on the evening, scoring 16, 19, and 15 points, respectively.

Oakville employed a newfound zone scheme against the Chitwhins in order to force the hand of the three scoring Taholah players.

"There's just some matchups that we don't do well with," said Harris, alluding to his team's size, or lack thereof. "Our 6-footers are probably 5-10."

Eventually the three Taholah horses began to wear down from harboring the entirety of the scoring burden and Oakville was able to hold on for a 6-point victory.

"They got tired and we put a little press on them and life was good for the Acorns," said Harris.

Rey Lopez led the Acorns with 20 points, while Geo Jack added 11, and TJ Trott tallied 7 points and 12 rebounds.

"It was senior night and the boys really worked hard this week in practice and it really showed," said Harris.

Oakville's seniors are Marcus Youkton, Kobe Lorton, TJ Trott, Geo Jack, John Atkins, Shawn Youkton, and Zach Harris.

Oakville (12-7 overall) has now won 12 of its last 15 games. The Acorns will travel to Adna on Monday to play the Pirates' JV squad.
