2A/1A Baseball: Tenino Hands Montesano First Loss

TENINO — The Beavers handed Montesano their first loss of the season here on Thursday, beating their Evergreen 2A/1A League foe 5-4.

Bulldog pitcher Jordan Bussard loaded the bases and then hit a batter to score the winning run in the game.

“Montesano played a really good game then we had a rain delay for about 30 minutes,” Tenino coach Connor Hogue said. “I think that helped us reground and focus. We wanted to play well at home and we didn’t want to get swept by them.”

The game started off with a 2-run homer for the Bulldogs, who led 3-0 after their first at-bat. Tenino answered back with a run, but still trailed 4-1 heading into the bottom of the third. Robbie Wall then hit his first career home run for the Beavers, a 2-run shot that made it a 4-3 game.

Tenino tied it up in the bottom of the fourth. In the bottom of the seventh, Zeb Chamberlain hit a double off the wall, and the Bulldogs intentionally walked Dakota Bellrose — who had gone 2 for 3 with an RBI in the game — and hit Wall with a pitch to load the bases, then hit catcher Terran Gilbreath to push in the winning run.

Pitcher Calvin Guzman struck out six in five innings of work, and Thomas Pier came on the sixth to pick up the win on the mound. Tenino (8-6, 8-2 league) hosts a nonleague matchup with Mossyrock on Monday and then hosts rival Rochester on Tuesday.
