Prep Softball: Bearcats Sweep Selah to Wrap Road Trip

SELAH — The Bearcats, playing at the site of the State 2A tournament, picked up a doubleheader sweep of Selah here on Saturday to cap off a weekend of adventures on the other side of the mountains. The Bearcats notched 13 hits in a 10-8 Game 1 win before finishing off the afternoon with a 15-8 victory.

“It seems like we were hitting the ball all over the place,” W.F. West coach Mike Keen said. “Their pitcher would throw off-speed, and it was good pitching, but we were patient, kept our hip back and hit the ball.”

W.F. West scored 6 in the first inning of the opener, which was matched by Selah. An injury

to starting pitcher Kim Frazier put freshman Ashlee Vadala in the circle, and Vadala struck out nine and held Selah to three hits the rest of the way. The Bearcats added 2 runs in the second and 2 more in the fourth to secure the win.

Caitlin Reynolds and Vadala both hit home runs in the first inning. Vadala finished with two hits, as did Kassidy Grandorff. Taylor Albright was 3 for 4 in the game.

“All of Taylor’s hits were sharp hits,” Keen said.

W.F. West had 17 hits in the 15-8 nightcap victory, again starting off hot with a 5-run first frame.

Ali Graham was 4 for 5 with a home run in the second inning and a double. Roni Braun had three hits while Reynolds, Vadala, Grandorff and Tessa Wollan each had two hits. Freshman Olivia Dean had a hit, walked three times and scored 4 runs for the Bearcats.

W.F. West (5-1) will open league play on Thursday when it hosts Tumwater.

Friday’s Results

Bearcats Down Ellensburg 7-3 Behind Graham’s 13 Ks

ELLENSBURG — The Bearcats got their road trip started with a bang, defeating Ellensburg 7-3 on Friday with a solid pitching outing from Ali Graham, who struck out 13 during the contest.

“I hadn’t planned on throwing Ali the entire game but she was dealing,” W.F. West coach Mike Keen said. “She only walked one batter and kept them off-balance the whole time.”

W.F. West led 4-2 after three innings before notching a 3-run rally in the fourth. The Bearcats finished with 13 hits as Graham went 3 for 4 with two doubles, while Jessica McKay, Caitlin Reynolds and Roni Braun each had two hits.
