Babe Ruth 15s: Twin Cities Dominates on Day 1

Posted

The first day of the 15-year-old Southern Washington Babe Ruth Baseball Tournament was sent into a bit of a tailspin with the rain pouring in Chehalis on Wednesday morning.

The wet weather moved two of the tournament's first two games from W.F. West's Bearcat Baseball Stadium to across Interstate 5 at Stan Hedwall Park, where tourney host Twin Cities proceeded to score a whopping 42 runs in 10 innings of action — and, needless to say, improve to 2-0 in pool play.

The local squad thumped Willapa Harbor, 20-1, in its opener, then dropped Kennewick, 22-4, in the late game.

"We just came out and really swung the bats well," Twin Cities assistant coach Chris Thomas said. "It was a nice first day."

Tyson Guerrero was 3 for 3 in the opener, while Drew Forgione, Nole Wollan, Joey Aliff and Tysen Paul each added two hits. Twin Cities led 5-0 after an inning and pushed the lead to 16-0 before Willapa Harbor managed a run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The hosts finished with 14 hits in their tournament debut. Tyler Pallas and Cole Miller handled the pitching, giving up two hits to Willapa Harbor.

Wollan went 5 for 6 in the late game, which featured 21 hits by Twin Cities. Austin Emery went 4 for 4, Jacob Cleary was 3 for 3 with three doubles and scored 5 runs, and Forgione went 3 for 4 and was walked twice. Tyler Pallas added two hits.

Twin Cities' knocked 21 hits in Wednesday's late game, with Emery, Noah Thomas and Miller combining to hold Kennewick to two hits.

The hosts scored 13 runs in the third inning on eight hits, and Kennewick's 4 runs came in a fourth inning in which Twin Cities' pitchers hit three batters.

Twin Cities (2-0) will take on Richland at 7 p.m. tonight at Bearcat Baseball Stadium, and will face Camas at 7 p.m. Friday before wrapping pool play with a 4 p.m. game against Kalama-Woodland-Ridgefield-La Center on Saturday. The three teams with the best pool play records will advance to bracket play on Sunday.
