All-League Basketball: Spencer Wins EvCo MVP; 2A, 1A Teams Released

For the fourth year in a row, a Bearcat — a different Bearcat, no less — won the league’s MVP award.

Julie Spencer, W.F. West’s 6-foot-1 forward, was voted the MVP of the Evergreen 2A Conference in the coaches’ annual All-League meeting.

Spencer, who has signed to play for the University of Portland next season, averaged 15.5 points and nine rebounds a game for the Bearcats, who went undefeated in league play this season. She followed former Bearcats Nike McClure (2014), Jamika Parker (2013) and Uriah Thomas (2012) as the league’s MVP.

Teammate Tiana Parker — a 6-foot-3 forward who has signed to play at Tennessee State University — was an All-League first-team pick, after scoring 15.5 points a game with 11 rebounds and five blocked shots a night.

Black Hills forward Shayla Smothers and guard Emma Duff were also first-team picks, along with Centralia’s Madi Crews and Annie Nugent.

Crews, a junior guard, averaged 10.4 points a game, while Nugent, a senior forward, scored 13 points a game. The Tiger coaching staff — coach Doug Ashmore and assistants Sarah Habel and Matt Whitmire — were voted the league’s staff of the year.

W.F. West guards Jessica McKay and Payton Kelly were both second-team picks.

Cooper, Mickelson Split EvCo MVP

The difference between the incumbent and the up-and-comer was too close to call.

Black Hills point guard T.J. Mickelson and Tumwater wing David Cooper shared the 2015 Evergreen 2A Conference MVP award, highlighting the release of the EvCo’s All-League teams.

The selections were voted on at a meeting of the league’s coaches Monday night.

Mickelson scored over 25 points a game for the Wolves while leading the team in assists.

Cooper won last year’s MVP award and averaged over 20 points a game for the league-champion Thunderbirds, who went on to upset No. 1-ranked Mark Morris in the District 4 championship game on Friday night. Teammates Ty Gentry, a point guard, and Weston Vandenhazel, a center, were named to the All-League first team.

Centralia’s sophomore guard Hodges Bailey, who averaged 21 points a game for the Tigers, and senior guard Gavin Kerner, a defensive lynchpin who scored 7.2 points a game, were also first-team selections.

As the league features only four teams, the first and second teams included only four players. W.F. West’s Adam Schwarz — a 6-foot-7 junior — was a second-team pick, along with Centralia’s Christian Peters and Black Hills forwards Chandler Yount and Tremarcus Hackney.

Rochester’s Demers, Lancaster Make All-League First Team

Rochester guards Keeli Demers and Joni Lancaster were both first-team picks in the Evergreen 2A/1A League’s All-League girls basketball voting.

The teams were voted upon by the league’s coaches at the conclusion of the regular season.

Demers, a senior, led the Warriors in scoring with 12 points a game, while Lancaster, a junior, averaged 10.9 points a game.

Montesano’s Jordan Spradlin and Megan Choate split the league’s MVP award, after leading the Bulldogs to an undefeated regular season.

Montesano’s Miranda Floch, Elma’s Bethany Lipska and Hoquiam’s Ellie Quercia were all first-team selections, while Rochester’s Madison Justice was a second-team pick.

Tenino center Taylor Tibbets and guard Alijo Vens were both honorable mention selections.

Peterson, Nelson All-League First-Team Picks

Tenino’s Nihls Peterson and Rochester’s Tanner Nelson were both first-team picks in the annual All-League voting by the boys basketball coaches of the Evergreen 2A/1A League.

Peterson, a 6-foot-4 junior, scored 18.8 points a game for the Beavers, who went 7-7 to finish fourth in the eight-team league.

Nelson, a 6-foot-4 senior, was a double-double machine, scoring 12.9 points a game for a Rochester squad that finished the league schedule 2-12.

Aberdeen guard Addam Follette was voted the league’s Most Valuable Player, after helping orchestrate an uptempo Bobcat attack that went undefeated in league play. Teammate and fellow guard Austin Floch was also a first-team pick, along with high-scoring Forks guard Colton Raben and Hoquiam sophomore Jack Adams III.

Rochester’s Jordan McLemore, a point guard who averaged 14.3 points a game, was a second-team pick.
