1A Football: Beavers Miscues Hurt in League Loss

TENINO — Miscues hurt Tenino in their first loss of the season, a 36-21 1A Evergreen Division setback at the hands of Hoquiam here on Friday night.

The Beavers outgained the Grizzlies, 399 to 286 total yards, but the Grizzlies were able to put together big plays in the second half to pull away.

"We kind of shot ourselves in the foot tonight too many times," Tenino coach Randy Swilley said. "We talked to the kids after the game and said when it comes to good teams, it breaks down to who has the fewest mistakes and Hoquiam made fewer mistakes tonight."

The Beavers took a 7-0 first-quarter lead on a 28-yard pass from Calvin Guzman to Spencer Brewer. Hoquiam answered, however, with two short touchdown runs by Tyler White in the second quarter. Zeb Chamberlain notched a 10-yard scoring jaunt for the Beavers before halftime to lock things at 14-14.

White caught a 54-yard pass from Bubba Dick to put Hoquiam up by a score after the break, but Kaleb Strawn gave the Beavers their last lead of the game at 21-20 with a 55-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Tenino finished with 321 total yards on the ground but couldn't take advantage of two lost Grizzly fumbles.

Hoquiam's White scored again on a five yard run in the third, and the Grizzlies iced it in the fourth quarter on a 1 run from Jerod Steen.

"We had a chance in the fourth quarter to almost tie it up but we had a couple of penalties that took us out of the drive," Swilley said.

Thomas Pier finished with 214 yards on 28 carries while Nihls Peterson hauled in three catches for 41 yards.

"Our kids played well and we gained nearly 400 yards of offense, so I'm not disappointed at that," Swilley said. "We just need to adjust a few things."

Tenino (2-1) will play at Elma on Friday in another 1A Evergreen game.
