Prep Girls Soccer: Napavine Falls to Hoquiam 1-0 in Defensive Battle

Posted

HOQUIAM — Playing their second game in 48 hours, the Tigers battled 1A Hoquiam close — but a second-half goal allowed the Grizzlies to come away with the 1-0 nonleague win here on Thursday. Napavine goalkeeper Devanie Kleemeyer had six saves in the battle.

"It was a hard fought game and very much a defensive battle on the field," Napavine coach Henry Gallanger said.

Hoquiam got its goal in the 55th minute and, according to Gallanger it was back and forth the rest of the way.

"We had a couple of chances that just went too far over and one shot grazed the outside of the post," he added.

Gallanger said he was pleased with how the Tigers — playing five freshmen at one point — handled the attack of the Grizzlies. He also liked the play of Nicole Sorenson and Lucy Sevilla in the midfield.

"In the 1A league, they'll be one of the better teams," he said of Hoquiam. "It was a good test for us to feel that pressure."

Napavine (1-1 overall) will play at Mt. Vernon Christian on Saturday and at Toledo on Tuesday for its first Central 2B League matchup of the season.

Seymour Leads Warriors Past W.F. West

ROCHESTER — The Warriors proved their ready for life as a 2A school here Thursday in their first girls soccer contest of the season.

Sierra Seymour scored one goal and assisted Joni Lancaster on another to power Rochester to a 2-1 win over W.F. West.

“We have quite a few new players in new positions, and overall it went very well,” Rochester coach John Hayes said of the team’s debut. “W.F. West is a good team.”

Anna Russell opened the scoring, putting the Bearcats on the board with a free kick in the 7th minute. Seymour then tied it up with a corner kick in the 19th minute.

Lancaster knocked in a dish from Seymour in the 61st minute, which proved to be enough for the win.

Junior twins Lilly and Lindy Grubbs — Lilly in the center midfield and Lindy in the middle of the back row — both played well, Hayes said, and added that Esmerelda Carpio put plenty of pressure on the Bearcat defense.

"We made some little mistakes, but it's a preseason game,” W.F. West coach Tino Sanchez said. “We just couldn't stay at a higher level of play. All in all, we did alright. We have some things we have to work on but that's what preseason is for."

W.F. West (1-1) will play at Olympia on Saturday. Rochester (1-0) will play at rival Tenino on Tuesday.

Castle Rock Shuts Out Winlock

CASTLE ROCK — The Rockets’ Jaynie Snaza and Tessa Hensley were a bit too much for the young Cardinals to handle here Thursday night in a 5-0 nonleague girls soccer loss.

Castle Rock led 1-0 at halftime on the strength of a Snaza goal. Snaza and Hensley each scored two more in the second half, with the final three coming in the last 20 minutes of the game.

“I was proud of the girls’ effort,” Winlock coach Kevin Schultz said. “I thought we played them hard for us being a pretty young team.”

Goalkeeper Sarah Howsden played well in the first half, Schultz said, but suffered an injury and was replaced by eighth-grader Cheleena Squibb.

“I thought she did a good job in the second half, for it being her first high school action,” Schultz said. “We were under some pressure in the second half, and she responded pretty well.”

Jazmin Ramirez played through a few injuries to control the attacking half of the field, Schultz added, and Maggie Howsden played played well at the back of the Cardinals’ defense.

"She was just a rock down there chasing things down,” Schultz said. “Castle Rock’s got a lot of speed, and I thought she did a good job of keeping up with them, for the most part.”

Winlock (0-2) plays a nonleague game at Kalama on Saturday, starting at 2 p.m.
