ROCHESTER — Emma Moon finished second in a tight top-three here Wednesday at the Evergreen 2A Conference cross country championships.

Moon, a W.F. West senior, was just 7 seconds behind Tumwater’s Hannah Reynolds in 20 minutes, 5.6 seconds, and just over a second ahead of Centralia junior Makayla Erickson (20:06.72).

Moon also closed in on a personal goal — breaking the 20-minute mark.

“I’m really pleased,” she said. “I ran a new lifetime best, so I’m really happy with that.”

Running against her crosstown competition, Erickson, helped.

“I think it’s good. It’s really competitive,” Moon said. “It drives both of us to be better, and it’s really fun to race with her.”

Erickson’s Tigers finished second in the team scoring, with 61 points to Tumwater’s 25. The Thunderbirds had five runners in the top eight, while Centralia’s Maggie Wood-Richardson was ninth (21:33) and teammate Brynna Rooklidge was 15th (22:24).

W.F. West’s Mya Davis was 14th (21:57), with teammate Xylie Warner in 16th (22:29) and Rochester’s Michala Lowry (23:03) in 17th.

Kelin Pasko finished third in the boys 5K varsity race, crossing the finish line less than 20 seconds behind Tumwater’s Joseph Morrissey. Morrissey, a senior, won the event in 15:56, with Black Hills’ Pearse Popchock second (16:03) and Pasko clocking in at 16:16.

Pasko set a personal record by three seconds on his home course.

“I feel good about it. I haven’t ran in five days,” the senior said. “I know these corners. I know how to take them wide and cut them in, and stuff like that.”

Black Hills won the boys meet, with Tumwater in second and W.F. West in third. Centralia finished fourth, with Rochester in fifth.

Vance Voetberg led the Tigers, taking fifth in 16:43. W.F. West’s Francisco Lima was sixth (16:52), Centralia’s Daniel Morales was seventh (16:56.01), and W.F. West’s Sonny Holub was eighth (16:56.37).

Centralia, W.F. West and Rochester will run next at the District 4 championships, on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Lewis River Golf Course in Woodland.

Notes: Chehalis’ Riley Johnston was second the middle school girls 1.5 mile race in 10:28, and Rochester’s Levi Jennings was third in the middle school boys race (8:14).
