Undefeated Tumwater kept its record spotless on Thursday night, sweeping Centralia in a quick 25-5, 25-19, 25-15 Evergreen 2A Conference volleyball match in the Hub City.

The Thunderbirds are currently ranked No. 1 in the state coaches association poll, and beat Curtis — the No. 2-ranked 4A team — in four sets last month.

“They’re No. 1 for a reason, and they certainly have the talent and the experience to be one of the favorites in the state this year,” Tiger coach Neil Sharp said.

Kaitlynn Johns led the way for Centralia, notching two blocks and providing her usual energy.

“We need to get the ball to her more offensively,” Sharp said, “but she’s been doing a great job.”

Hayden Blaser had 14 assists and Bryse Gilmore recorded 15 digs for Centralia, while Kary Sathre had seven kills and McKenna Smith added four kills.

Centralia (13-6, 0-2 league) will host W.F. West on Tuesday.

Bearcats Fall in Injury-Filled Match Against Black Hills

TUMWATER — The full moon didn’t do W.F. West any favors in an injury-riddled Evergreen 2A Conference loss to Black Hills 25-10, 25-17, 16-25, 25-15 here on Thursday. The Bearcats saw hitter Ashlee Vadala go down with a bad ankle injury, while setter Abby Guerrero missed action after a collision with a teammate.

“We would just get some momentum going and then one of those things would happen,” W.F. West coach Lisa Wilson said. “There was no excuse for our slow start, but we need to work on getting more consistent.”

Rylee Hanson notched 15 digs for the Bearcats to go along with 9 of 10 serving and two aces. Shasta Lofgren had six kills, serving 12 for 13 with four aces, four digs and a block. Freshman Makenzie Moore continued to have success with four kills, three solo blocks and 6 for 6 serving with an ace.

In the second set, Guerrero ran into the hip of a teammate and had to sit out while Haley Simmons came in to set. Guerrero would return later in the match, finishing with seven digs, four kills, 10 of 10 serving with an ace and 10 assists. Guerrero is still serving 100 percent on the season.

Jessica McKay also had nine digs, five kills and 3 of 4 serving.

W.F. West (4-4, 0-2 league) plays at rival Centralia on Tuesday.
