2A Girls Wrestling: Bearcats Earn First Ever Win Over Centralia

Tuesday is a day that will be bookmarked in Bearcat lore henceforth as the W.F. West girls wrestling team bested Centralia 37-24 in a 2A Evergreen Conference dual meet.

The rivalry victory was the first ever for the Bearcats over the Tigers.

“I’m always thankful for Centralia because as far as Mark (Holmberg) and their coaching staff. We always try to find weight classes and meet up and get the best matches that we can,” said W.F. West coach Matt Patana. “It’s a fantastic way to get things going and it’s also nice to have a rivalry where we might come out on the winning end from time to time.”

W.F. West picked up a win at 130 pound when Natasha Dugger defeated Analeese McCallister in a 9-4 decision.

“Tasha Dugger, she’s one who has actually lost to Analeese before so getting a win from here by changing her style up a little bit to keep herself from getting thrown and working into something, that was probably the one that made me the most proud tonight,” noted Patana.

Kallee Corey (135) of W.F. West kept the Bearcats on the right path with a 13-4 major decision victory over Rylee Grose before Xyla Warner pinned Kupria Lapierre in the first round of their 140 pound match.

“Obviously X was great, she did what she does. It was just like any other night of her. No problem,” said Patana of Warner’s win. “It was also a tremendous match by Kallee Corey who is a freshman for us and hasn’t had that kind of success for us in the past but she went all three round and wrestled very strong.”

Centralia was able to pick up a couple of first round pins at 145 pound and 170 pounds by Angie Contreras and Annie Lapierre, respectively.

“I think we pretty much won the ones we were supposed to win tonight, and maybe even lost one or two that we shouldn’t have lost,” said Centralia coach Mark Holmberg. “This is the first time we’ve ever lost to W.F. West since we started the girls team but this is a rebuilding year.”

Holmberg lamented that the fans didn’t get to see the Tigers super freshman Jade (Jah-Gee) Hudson, who won by forfeit at 100 pounds. He noted that Hudson is 17-2 on the season and has claimed consecutive tournament titles.

“We’re super young. Eight freshmen, one sophomore, and two seniors, but they’re coming along,” said Holmberg. “It’s a super young team. Super inexperienced but we’re getting better and better.”

Both W.F. West and Centralia will wrestle at the Lady Trapper Invite at Fort Vancouver on Saturday.
