A tight rivalry match went to a tiebreaker on Friday, with host Centralia edging W.F. West on the strength of a 63-51 advantage in games won after a 3-3 stalemate in matches.
The host Tigers swept the singles portion of the match, while the guest Bearcats won all three doubles matches.
“(W.F. West coach) Jack (State) and I were talking about it, and you think about this being an individual sport, but really, when the competition is so close, it becomes a team sport,” Centralia coach Deb Keahey said. “Every player has to fight for every point in every game.”
Hayden Blaser beat Joelle Chung, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0, in the top singles match, and Claire Davis and Rachel Wilkerson both won 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 2 and 3 singles matches for Centralia.
Then, in doubles action, Isabel Vander Stoep and Emma Lund beat Hannah Gundersen and Ellie Corwin, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 in the No. 1 contest.
Mya Davis and Megan Wilks won, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles, and Rielee Flodin and Charlotte Grace won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 3 doubles.
“I’m really happy for the girls,” Keahey said. “They’ve got a reason to fight for every game, even though maybe they lost. I was really pleased that they gave it their all.”
Centralia (8-5, 4-4 league) plays at Tumwater on Wednesday.
W.F. West (5-8, 0-8 league) plays at Mark Morris on Tuesday.
