2A Girls: Black Hills Comes Back Against Centralia

TUMWATER — The Tigers had the league-leading Wolves on the ropes in the fourth quarter but fell 60-55 in Evergreen 2A Conference action here on Friday. Centralia saw its 7-point lead in the fourth quarter disappear when Black Hills turned up the pressure on defense.

“We just didn’t handle it well,” Centralia coach Doug Ashmore said. “They made us rush on offense and we had some unforced turnovers and that’s how they were able to get back into it.”

Missed free throws down the stretch — the Tigers finished 11 of 22 from the line — were also troublesome for Centralia. Both Alyx Fast and Madi Crews scored 15 points for the Tigers, and Crews notched her 1,000th career point in the contest.

Freshman Chloee Akins started and notched 12 points and seven rebounds. Ellie Corwin led the Tigers in rebounds with 15 while also adding 7 points.

Centralia (11-7, 1-3 league) plays at Tumwater on Tuesday.

Cold-Shooting Cats Fall to Tumwater

The Bearcats hit a shooting slump and couldn’t pull out of it Friday in a 46-40 loss to Tumwater in Evergreen 2A Conference girls hoops action in Chehalis.

Lexi Strasser came off the bench to score 16 points to lead W.F. West, which shot 15 of 52 from the field and 10 of 26 from the foul stripe.

“If you look at all those stats, it’s a bad deal,” Bearcat coach Tom Kelly said. “We didn’t play that well, but if you shoot 50 percent at the foul line, this would be a win. It’s hard to win any close games like that.”

Mackenzie Bergquist led Tumwater with 13 points. The Thunderbirds outscored W.F. West 13-6 in the third to take the lead for good.

W.F. West (12-7, 2-2 lead) hosts Black Hills on Tuesday.
