2A Boys Wrestling: Under the Weather Warriors Waylaid by Aberdeen

Posted

ROCHESTER — The final score here on Wednesday might as well have read Influenza 1 - Warriors 0.

That’s because Aberdeen came to the unincorporated burg of south Thurston County and put a whooping on a Rochester wrestling team that had been battling (and losing) a team-wide bout of the flu prior to their 2A Evergreen Conference dual.

“The night did not go that great. We’ve been fighting the flu so only eight kids suited down tonight,” said Rochester coach Jason Dick. “Only two of our best wrestlers were actually in the lineup. That was Elijzah (Spitzer) and Jayden (Lancaster) so we gave up 36 points in forfeits. You can’t win a dual like that.”

Lancaster made short work of his opponent with a pin at 160 pounds while Spitzer outlasted state-qualifier Erick Hayter 12-10 for a win in the heavyweight match.

Kalob Spann and Kyle Lupardis also notched wins by pin for Rochester at 182 pounds, and 138 pounds, respectively.

“Lupaardis, went out there still ill and under the weather and got a pin tonight,” said Dick. “I was proud of the freshman. He did a good job.”

The Rochester boys will wrestle at Kalama on Saturday while the girls team will head to Puyallup for the Viking Invite.
