2A/1A Softball: Rochesters Powers Past Tenino in Scatter Creek Softball Showdown

Posted

TENINO — Rochester scored nine runs in the first inning and rolled in a 13-0, four-inning win over Tenino in a nonleague Scatter Creek softball rivalry game here Thursday.

Hunter Hahn pitched all four innings for the Warriors, allowing three hits with one strikeout and a walk.

Rochester’s Thaila Phothisat was 3 for 3 at the plate. Delaney Glazer and Hunter Hahn each went 2 for 4 with a double, and Bella Phelps was 3 for 3 with a triple, a double and two runs.

The Warriors scored all 13 of their runs in the first and fourth innings.

“We kind of took the foot off the pedal a little bit in the second and third inning. We can’t do that with anybody,” Rochester coach Dave Montgomery said. “Kudos to Tenino, they’re kind of rebuilding and getting there. There’s still a couple really good players over there and if we’re going to let off the gas pedal, those guys are going to come back on us and I told them that, too.”

Bailey Greene, Reegan Larson, Aurora Loya all had hits for the Beavers.

“I think we played really well for how young our team is. We don’t have a whole lot of experience out there,” Tenino coach KaTrina Haupert said. “We had six freshman starting and I definitely think the inexperience shows when we play a team like that who has a lot of experience.”

Rochester had 11 hits in the first inning, with four doubles and a triple, to plate nine runs. The Warriors added four more in the fourth inning, on four hits, to bring the mercy rule into effect.

It was an odd game for Montgomery, a Tenino alum and the Beavers’ former JV coach under Wanda Blanksma. His father was at the game and, afterwards, asked his son if could change from a Rochester hat back to a Tenino hat.

“I had just so many great years coaching here and going to school here and getting to see some of those really great players that played when I was here in the 90s,” Montgomery said. “It’s cool. It is a little weird, admittedly, but it is neat to come back and pick up a W on your old home turf.”

Haupert was pleased with freshman pitcher Cassie Cannon’s performance against Rochester.

“I think she (Cannon) did amazing. She’s started every game so far and she will be our starting pitcher this year,” Haupert said. “I’m just excited for not only this season, but what’s to come because she’s already shown me so much composure and so much maturity with her as an athlete and she’s only a freshman. I’m just excited to work with her.”

Tenino (0-3) has a week off before hosting a nonleague doubleheader with Rainier.

Haupert hopes her team can build some confidence before they get back on the field.

“We’re going to be focusing really on two things: just confidence in our skills and also communicating to make sure we always know where the play is at,” Haupert said.

Rochester (2-0) hosts Hoquiam on Tuesday in a nonleague game.

Tigers Pound Capital in Season Opener

OLYMPIA — Centralia pounded out 17 hits here Thursday afternoon to win its softball season opener, 15-4, in five innings over 3A Capital.

Sophie Duffy pitched the first three frames, facing just nine batters with five strikeouts and one walk. The one baserunner, however, was thrown out attempting to steal second by catcher Hannah Porter.

Tyler Jorgenson went 3 for 4 at the plate with three RBIs and a fifth-inning home run. Mckenna Smith and Courtney Leifer Carlson were each 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, and freshman Courtney Spriggs was 3 for 3 with two RBIs.

Capital scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Tigers ended the threat to wrap things up early.

“We played pretty solid, defensively. We got out of a jam there at the end that could have been a lot worse, but we made the plays in the beginning, and Sophie threw well,” Centralia coach Mike McDonald said. “I was very pleased for the first time out this season, for sure.”

Centralia hosts 1A Hoquiam on Friday at Fort Borst Park, then hosts a jamboree on Saturday with Pe Ell-Willapa Valley (and longtime Tiger coach Ken Olson), Adna (and former Centralia assistant Bruce Pocklington), and Mount Si (coached by former Tiger standout Lauren Dumoulin).

Bearcats Trounce Olympia in Season’s First Game

OLYMPIA — Olivia Dean, Ashlee Vadala and Paytton Crawford all homered, and the Bearcats crushed Olympia, 21-2, in five innings of nonleague softball action here Thursday.

Crawford went 4 for 4 with six RBIs and a grand slam in W.F. West’s 13-run fourth inning. Dean was 5 for 5 with five RBIs and Vadala went 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

Noelle Roberts went 2 for 3 for the Bearcats, driving in two runs to kick off the scoring in the second inning, and Annika Waring was 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs.

The hit total, according to first-year Bearcat coach Caty Lieseke, wasn’t a major surprise for the defending State 2A champions.

“We’ve been working hard in the cages, and it’s fun to see that pay off out in the field,” she said.

Vadala pitched all five innings, allowing two hits and striking out four.

“She really let our defense take care of the work, and she looked calm, cool and collected in the circle,” Lieseke said.

W.F. West (1-0) hosts Kelso on Tuesday at Recreation Park in Chehalis.
