2B Volleyball: Tigers Sweep Into District Semifinals

NAPAVINE — The host Tigers took care of two Pacific 2B League opponents here Saturday, sweeping South Bend and Ocosta in the first two rounds of the District 4 2B Volleyball Tournament.

The wins put No. 2-ranked Napavine (15-1) in the district semifinals on Wednesday night. They also secure the Tigers a berth in the State 2B tournament.

The Tigers beat South Bend 25-8, 25-16, 25-18, with Maddie Thompson, Mollie Olson, Olivia Woodrum, Abbi Music and Melissa Lee each perfect at the service stripe.

Thompson added six digs, Williams had five aces and 13 assists, Olson had 11 kills and eight block-kills, Woodrum had five digs and three aces, Music had four aces, six kills and 11 digs, and Lee had six kills and eight digs.

Carleigh Oster added four kills and a pair of aces.

The win put the Tigers in the quarterfinals against Ocosta, where Napavine won 25-9, 25-19, 25-17. Williams had 16 assists, Ashley Dickinson added 12 assists, and Music notched eight digs. Olson piled up 19 kills and six digs, and Lee had 12 kills with four digs.

“I was excited to see how aggressive and focused they were to play,” Napavine coach Monica Dailey said. “We’ve been lacking high energy, but they definitely brought it Saturday. Our goal moving forward is to focus on playing with a ton of energy and be methodical in our play.”

Napavine faces off against Life Christian Academy at Raymond High School on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the district semifinals.

Mossyrock Secures State Bid

MOSSYROCK — The Vikings are headed back to the state tournament after winning their first two matches here Saturday as one of the host teams in the District 4 2B Volleyball Tournament.

Mossyrock, last year’s state runner-up, beat Toledo in three sets and then dispatched of Raymond, also in three sets, to advance to Wednesday’s district semifinals and secure one of tournament’s six state bids.

The Vikings beat Toledo 25-3, 25-5, 25-12, missing just three serves in the match.

Ava Nelson was 20 of 21 at the service line with five aces, 11 assists and five kills, and Shania Hadaller served 16 of 17 with five aces.

Heather Edgar led the Vikings with nine kills, Stephanie Fried added 10 digs and five kills, and Jamie Carlson notched eight digs. Lainee Grose pitched in with nine assists.

“We got to play all 14 girls, and some of our girls came in off the bench and I don’t think they missed a serve,” Mossyrock coach Alex Nelson said. “I was really proud of the girls.”

Mossyrock then kept rolling against Raymond, winning 25-15, 25-19, 25-16 in the tournament quarterfinals. Five different Vikings had at least eight digs, with Carlson tallying nine digs and 18 free passes.

“That’s passing it right, perfectly, to our setter, which allowed us to run a lot more quick attacks,” Nelson said. “That’s probably why Paige (Moorcroft) led us with 13 kills.”

Moorcroft and Carlson both played well, Nelson pointed out. Andee Nelson notched seven kills, Fried served 19 of 19 with three aces, Grose was 16 of 16 serving with two aces, and Ava Nelson racked up 31 assists.

Mossyrock (14-1), the No. 1-ranked team in the 2Bs, faces off with Kalama at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, in Raymond, in a rematch of last year’s State 2B championship contest. The Vikings beat Kalama in three sets in a Central 2B League match on Thursday.

“There’s history between us. We’ve kind of been battling the last two years,” Nelson said. “But we look forward to it. I think our girls thrive on a little bit more competition.”



Adna Bumped from Districts

TACOMA — The Pirates were swept by Life Christian and then lost to Willapa Valley in four sets here Saturday, bringing their volleyball season to a close in the District 4 tournament.

Life Christian, the Pacific 2B League champion, topped Adna 25-7, 25-19, 25-8 on Saturday morning.

“They had a pretty good front row, which kind of stopped out offense,” Pirate coach Wendie Dotson said.

Darian Humphrey had 10 digs, and Adison Stewart picked up five kills for Adna in the first-round match.

The loss put Adna (4-12) in a loser-out contest with Willapa Valley, which the Vikings won 14-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-15.

“We started off really strong, and what we struggle with is we allow other teams to come in and roll off a number of points before we can side out,” Dotson said. “It kind of changes your momentum and your way of thinking. You’re playing not to lose, and it’s a whole different game, and we’ve kind of struggled with that all year.”

Stewart had 10 kills, SameeJo Moon had 11 digs, and Ruby Bower had six aces and served well, Dotson said.

The Pirates’ two seniors — Humphrey and Kelsi Latimer — played well in their final match, Dotson added. Humphrey played well defensively and at the service line, while Latimer set the ball well at the net.

MWP Falls to Ilwaco, NWC

LACEY — A pair of losses brought the season to an end for Morton-White Pass here Saturday in the District 4 2B Volleyball Tournament.

The Timberwolves lost to host Northwest Christian, 25-12, 25-14, 25-7, in their opener, with three kills apiece from Delanie Hannah, Aubree Gross and Katie Salguero. Krystal Wright passed well for MWP, coach Tammy Kelly added.

“We never really got our offense going,” Kelly said. “We just really struggled getting the ball in the court.”

The loss put the Timberwolves in a loser-out match against Ilwaco, which the Fishermen won, 25-10, 16-25, 25-22, 25-19.

Carly King had 16 assists, seven kills and four aces, Belen Salguero notched 12 kills, Jacie Dunlap had five kills, and Hannah Smathers added 10 assists.

Dunlap played a good all-around game, Kelly said, and Taylor Hazen passed well in serve-receive.

Morton-White Pass finished the season with a 5-12 record, and graduates seniors Krystal Wright and Kylie Heimbigner.

“It’s always hard when the season ends before you want it to,” Kelly said. “We’re going to miss our two senior girls, but we’re excited about what we have coming back next year.”

Notes: Toledo lost to Mossyrock in three sets, and then to Wahkiakum in three sets, to conclude its season on Saturday in Mossyrock. The Indians (3-15) graduate seniors Laurell Sorenson and Shy-Anne Hill. … Onalaska (5-12) was swept by Ocosta to open district play in Napavine, and then lost to South Bend to close out its season. The Loggers graduate seniors Phoebe Rich, Danyka Nevitt, Alicia Vint and McKenzie Pannkuk.
