2B Track: Adna’s Apperson Wins State 1600 Title

CHENEY — Adna’s Austen Apperson came up big in his first race of the 2018 State 2B Track and Field Championships.

Apperson, a junior and the state cross country champion, won the 1600 meters here Thursday at Eastern Washington University in 4 minutes, 17 seconds — besting his time from last year, when he took third, by over 9 seconds.

Walla Walla Valley’s Justin Roosma took second in 4:19.

Adna’s Lauryn Apperson, Austen’s sister, was 14th in the girls 1600 in 5:55.

Morton-White Pass’ Levi Clements qualified for the finals in the boys 300 hurdles, and Napavine’s Mollie Olson qualified for the finals in the girls 300 hurdles. Both races will be run on Saturday.

Friday’s Results

CHENEY — Napavine’s Mollie Olson finished second in the triple jump, at 35 feet, 10 inches, here Friday on Day 2 of the State 2B Track and Field Championships at Eastern Washington University.

Olson was 6 inches behind winner Matty Lagerway of La Conner. Teammate Chloe Stewart was fifth at 33-5.75, and Olson also had the fastest time in the 100-meter hurdle preliminaries in 15.62 seconds.



Toledo and Mossyrock’s girls took four of the top five spots in the javelin. Toledo’s Ally Bacon was second, at 128-02; Mossyrock’s Ava Nelson and Jamie Carlson were third (127-08) and fourth (120-05), respectively; and Toledo’s Kal Schaplow was fifth (119-02). Raymond’s Karlee Freeman won the event at 130-11.

Nelson also finished fifth in the discus, at 108-09 — an event Freeman won with a toss of 167-02, breaking her own meet record (set in 2016) by nearly 8 feet.

In boys action, Pe Ell’s Andrew Schulz finished second in the long jump at 22 feet, 2.25 inches, with teammate Ryan Shepherd finishing sixth (20-05). Pe Ell’s Bradley Prestegord finished fifth in the boys shot put at 45-01.

Adna’s Austen Apperson had the second-fastest time in the 800 preliminaries, by .11 seconds, and Adna’s Luke Wellander had the fastest time in the boys 110-meter hurdles preliminaries (15.68 seconds). Toledo’s Anthony Peak also qualified for the finals in the 110 hurdles.

Morton-White Pass’ Tristan Storey qualified for the 100 finals, as did Schulz and Adna’s Brady Collins. The same trio qualified for the 200 finals.

Mossyrock’s Lucas Johnson made the finals in the boys 400, and Mossyrock’s Maleah Nixon Klein made the finals in the girls 200.

Mossyrock’s girls qualified for the 4x200 finals, Toledo’s girls qualified for the 4x100 finals, and the MWP, Toledo and Adna boys all qualified for the 4x100 finals.

The State 1B, 2B and 1A track championships conclude on Saturday at Eastern Washington University.
