2B Girls Basketball: Toledo Earns First Win Over Mossyrock

TOLEDO — Toledo took the lead early and never looked back, defeating Mossyrock 43-33 in a Central 2B League girls basketball game here Wednesday.

Kal Schaplow led Toledo with 12 points, while Anna Tauscher chipped in 9 with three boards.

It was the first win for the Indians, and first-year head coach Brian Layton, in their initial C2BL matchup.

“The effort was there and our defense is getting better, but Mossyrock is a good team, so it is a big win,” Toledo coach Brian Layton said. “We really want to try to be a get-up-and-go team — get it up the sideline, try to score in transition as much as we can before the other team sets up. That was the game plan, for sure.”

Stephanie Fried led Mossyrock with 7 points. Heather Edgar and Ava Nelson each added 6.

“They played a little rough. I think they were expecting something different, they just didn’t come out with much intensity,” Mossyrock coach Autumn Moorcroft, also in her first year on the sidelines, said of her squad. “I think they weren’t expecting the pressure that Toledo definitely gave them tonight. Their shots weren’t falling and we’re having a difficult time getting to the rim to get some easy shots.”

Toledo got a few transition buckets early to take a 12-7 lead after a quarter, and stretched it to 23-13 at halftime.

Mossyrock came alive in the third quarter and mounted a comeback, trimming the lead to 7 points, but couldn’t come any closer.

Toledo (1-2, 1-0 league) hits the road to face Wahkiakum on Friday in a league game, while Mossyrock (2-1, 0-1 league) hosts Toutle Lake on Friday in a C2BL game.

Timberwolves Thrash Trojans

PE ELL — Morton-White Pass’ defense was too much for Pe Ell here on Wednesday, as the Timberwolves earned a 52-12 win in a Central 2B League girls basketball game.

Sierra Dotson led MWP 22 points and Jacie Dunlap added 14. Annika Mason led Pe Ell with 6 points.

The Timberwolves built a 27-4 lead by halftime.

“Right now, we’re struggling to find where the rim’s at. The girls played well on defense, but when you can’t find the basket, it’s difficult to overcome,” Pe Ell coach Chris Phelps said. “I’m proud of the girls that have stepped in with a few starters down. MWP made the most of their opportunities. We’ve just got to figure out how to score.”

Pe Ell (0-3, 0-1 league) travels to Napavine on Friday for a C2BL game, while MWP (1-2, 1-0 league) hosts Rainier on Friday in Morton in a league matchup.

Tigers Thump Adna in Opener

NAPAVINE — Three Tigers scored in double figures, and Napavine had little trouble with Adna here Wednesday night in Central 2B League girls basketball action.

Mollie Olson led Napavine with 16 points. Becca Snaza added 13 and Melissa Lee chipped in 11.

The Tigers led 17-3 after a quarter.

“It was a good first game,” Napavine coach Jeremy Landram said. “We played hard, but it’s definitely our starting point, so we’ll see what happens from here.”

Lucy Sevilla, he added, played well, scoring all 6 of her points in the first quarter on a pair of open 3-pointers.

The Tigers, with everyone back from last year’s squad, played better than in their 2016 opener, Landram added, when the team had just three players with varsity experience.

“It was just a huge difference,” he said. “Just the progress they’ve made in the year is really good.”

Ellie Sliva and Payton Aselton each scored 5 for Adna.

Napavine (1-0) hosts Pe Ell on Friday. Adna (1-2, 0-1 league) hosts Onalaska on Friday.

Loggers Beat Rainier for First Win

ONALASKA — The Loggers notched their first win of the season here Wednesday night, power past Rainier 39-15 in Central 2B League girls hoops action.

Phoebe Rich led the way with 10 points, and Onalaska led 13-3 after a quarter and 23-10 by halftime.

The Loggers notched 16 steals in the win, and bounced back from a 2-point third quarter to salt the game away late.

Phoebe Rich, a senior playing for the first time in three years, led the Loggers with 10 points, and coach Dracy McCoy said Eryn Duryea (7 points, eight rebounds, three steals, three assists) played well.

Carmen Berrera led Onalaska with nine rebounds. Sandra Miles led Rainier with 8 points.

Onalaska (1-2) plays at Adna on Friday at 6 p.m.

Mules Crush Winlock 71-9

CATHLAMET — The Cardinals fell behind quickly and Wahkiakum didn’t take its foot off the gas until late in a 71-9 C2BL girls hoops win here Wednesday night.

Macie Elliott scored 21 points for the Mules, who led 25-4 after a quarter and 45-6 at halftime.

Cheleena Squibb scored 5 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for Winlock, which turned the ball over 42 times.

“We did not play well. There’s no way to sugarcoat that,” Winlock coach Tori Nelson said. “We pretty much were just giving them the ball.”

Nelson, however, took issue with Wahkiakum leaving some of its starting lineup in well into the fourth quarter of what turned out to be a 60-point win.

“I could be just being a sore loser, but I don’t understand that concept,” she said.

Winlock (1-2, 0-1 league) hosts Kalama on Friday for a C2BL game.
