2B Girls Basketball: Mossyrock Stays Alive, Defeats Northwest Christian

Posted

ROCHESTER — Mossyrock’s Lainee Grose scored 29 points to lead the Vikings to a 47-38 win over Northwest Christian in a loser-out District 4 2B Girls Basketball Tournament game here Thursday night.

Ava Nelson added 9 points and 17 rebounds, and Paige Moorcroft chipped in 9 points and 10 rebounds. Heidi Sowers scored 29 points for the Navigators, who had just two players score.

The Vikings held an 8-2 lead after a quarter and an 18-12 advantage at halftime.

Mossyrock had a 30-12 lead midway through the third quarter, but the Navigators chipped away and cut the lead to 33-31 midway through the fourth. Grose, though, hit a few key 3-pointers and the Vikings made free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

“We played fine. In the first half, we executed pretty well,” Mossyrock coach Darin Bullock said. “We were taking care of the basketball, weren’t making unforced turnovers. We were doing the things we needed to do to put ourselves in a position to have the lead.”

The third and early fourth quarter, though, turned the tide a bit.

“We were having troubles in that third quarter where we weren’t taking care of the basketball. We weren’t executing as well as we should,” Bullock added. “But in the fourth quarter, down the stretch, we really took care of business.”

Mossyrock (11-9) is back on the court on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Montesano, in another loser-out game against the loser of Saturday’s North Beach-Wahkiakum quarterfinal.

Toledo’s Season Ends With Loss to Ocosta

ROCHESTER — Toledo had a last-second shot to keep its season alive, but the shot didn’t fall as Ocosta earned a 50-47 win in a District 4 tournament game here on Thursday.

Toledo was led by Rylan Richardson with 16 points. Anna Tauscher added 13.

Ocosta’s Kristi Raffelson scored 19 points and Kaylee Barnum chipped in 14.

Toledo led 12-10 after the first quarter, but Ocosta tied the game at 21 at halftime. The Wildcats held the advantage after three quarters and were able to hang on down the stretch — including shooting 6 of 8 from the free throw line in the fourth — for the win.

“It was a seesaw game. We had a 4-point lead, they’d come back to take a lead, and it was back and forth like that,” Toledo coach J.B. Ewers said. “They outscored us at the line, 12-6. That was the difference in the game.”

Toledo (6-16) won’t lose any key players to graduation, and will look to get back into the postseason next year.

“We’ll return everybody next year, and we’ll get one of our injured kids back next year,” Ewers said. “We plan on having a great season next year.”

Loggers Down South Bend

MONTESANO — Kasey Hoyt scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Loggers to a 48-39 win over South Bend in a loser-out District 4 tournament game here Thursday.

Eryn Duryea scored 9 points, and Heather Pannkuk and Adalee Sabin each added 8 points for Onalaska. South Bend was led by Karley Reidinger with 20 points and Jessica Sanchez added 17.

South Bend came out strong and took a 10-4 lead after a quarter, though Onalaska heated up and led by a point at halftime. The Loggers dominated the second half, and big 3-pointers from Sabin, Hoyt and Duryea pushed Onalaska to the win.

“They came out and played hard. We were a little slow to start. It took us a while to get going,” Onalaska coach Dracy McCoy said. “We came out and played hard that second half. It was a good hard game, and the girls knew it was win or go home. … Hoyt and (Heather) Pannkuk were determined to win tonight.”

Onalaska (9-13) is back on the court Monday at 8 p.m. in Rochester, awaiting the loser of the Saturday’s Raymond-Napavine quarterfinal.

Toutle Lake Ends Pe Ell’s Season

MONTESANO — Pe Ell won the rebounding battle against Toutle Lake on Thursday, but it wasn’t enough for a win, as the Ducks earned a 57-34 win in a District 4 tournament game here Thursday.

Dakota Brooks led Pe Ell with 8 points and 18 rebounds. Ashlynn Dean scored 20 points and Kelsey Wason added 11 for the Ducks.

Toutle Lake took a 17-6 lead after a quarter and expanded the lead to 32-13 at halftime. Pe Ell fought hard in the second half, but the deficit was too much to overcome for the Trojans.

Pe Ell outrebounded Toutle Lake 40-25 and shot eight more free throws, but the Trojans had 31 turnovers compared to 12 for the Ducks.

“When you look at the stats, we presented ourselves with more opportunities with our free throws and shot attempts. They just did a better job finishing,” Pe Ell coach Chris Phelps said. “We played great defense all night. We struggled to get the ball in the hole. When you can’t put the ball in the basket, it’s tough to win.”

The loss ended Pe Ell’s (5-17) season, and the prep basketball careers of Brooks, Railey Smith, Chloe Zock, Danielle McCarty and Sudie Blankenship.

“Brooks, Smith, Zock, they’re all four-year basketball players that contributed a tremendous amount to this program and I’m very thankful,” Phelps said. “McCarty, Blankenship, those girls made a lasting impression. I’m looking forward to next year.”
