2B Football: Tigers Crush Wahkiakum

CATHLAMET — Gavin Parker ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns, and Napavine rolled in a 49-6 win over Wahkiakum here Friday in non-league 2B football action.

The Tigers led 14-0 after a quarter, but the score wasn’t exactly indicative of the action, Napavine coach Josh Fay said.

“(Wahkiakum coach Erik) Hanson was really happy with how his kids played early in the game,” Fay said. “We struggled to get to 14-0 there in the first quarter, and then we just kind of settled in.”

Tanner Low and quarterback Laythan Demarest both scored on runs of over 30 yards in the first frame, and Parker scored on 5- and 55-yard runs in the second quarter.

“That’s his best game offensively for us,” Fay said of Parker, a sophomore. “That’s a pretty solid night for him, and we really spread the ball around offensively.”

Demarest finished with five carries for 98 yards, and notched a 42-yard touchdown run and a 8-yard touchdown pass to Landon Dahl in the third frame. Scotty Burdick added a 3-yard touchdown run in the final stanza.

Italian exchange student Pietro De Battista hit all six of his point-after kick attempts, and sophomore Collin Bennett knocked through his fourth-quarter try, giving the Tigers what Fay referred to as a rare perfect PAT performance.

“I was happy with that, and I thought up front our effort was pretty good offensively,” he added, citing Keith Olson, Fernando Gaona, Hayden Thompson, Grant Bennett and AJ Medina for their work on the line. “I liked those guys tonight, and I thought Gavin did a good job behind them seeing some stuff.”

Napavine (4-0) hosts Adna (3-1) on Friday.
