2A Boys Tennis: Burrit Wins Long Match in Tigers’ Loss to Monarchs

LONGVIEW — Josh Burrit notched the only win for Centralia’s boys tennis team in a nonleague 5-1 loss to Mark Morris here on Monday, and took his time doing it.

Burrit, in the No. 3 singles match, beat Adam Burkhardt 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 with a 7-3 tiebreaker in the third set. The match lasted 2 ½ hours and marked Burrit’s first varsity win of the season.

“All his matches have been close, and I’m really proud of how he came back after losing the first set to get the win for us,” Centralia coach Keith Hopkins said.

Cobie Blaser lost in three sets in a No. 1 singles match, and Ben Kallus and Noah Corwin lost in three in the No. 1 doubles match, both of which took more than two hours.

“A few key points and it could have gone our way,” Hopkins said of the long doubles match. “These guys are warriors. They’ll adjust and come back next match.”

Centralia (1-4, 1-1 league) will play at Tumwater on Wednesday.

Friday’s Results

R.A. Long Drops W.F. West

Levi Walters picked up the Bearcats’ lone win on Friday afternoon in Chehalis in a 5-1 nonleague boys tennis victory for R.A. Long.

Walters, in the third singles match, beat R.A. Long’s Tristan Lumsden, 6-4, 6-0.

With the Bearcats short a few varsity players, Andrew Gregory and Brandon Touhey moved up to second doubles and took Daylen Bor and Ethan Chung to three sets before falling, 6-1, 6-7, 7-5.

“They did a nice job,” W.F. West coach Jack State said. “They had opportunities to win in the third set, but missed a few shots.”

Andrew Pak and Joey Powe, a freshman and sophomore, respectively, at No. 3 doubles, also played well, State said.

W.F. West (1-4, 1-1 league) will be back in Evergreen 2A Conference action with a match tonight at Black Hills.
