By Caleb Breakey Don’t be fooled by the pink bow in her hair, or the contagious smile, or the way she hopped from one teammate to the next in near hysteria. That’s the Ramona Lorton after she’s stepped out of the circle, after she’s recorded 21 outs, after she’s limited her crosstown rivals to one hit. When Lorton is pitching, she’s downright nasty. The Tigers’ left-handed thrower no-hit W.F. West through 6⅔ innings before allowing a run-scoring infield single to Bearcat shortstop Lindsay Schmitt in the seventh inning at Fort Borst Park Thursday, as Centralia beat the Bearcats 6-1 to claim the Evergreen 2A Conference crown. Lorton struck out three and walked four in her 92-pitch performance. She also smacked a pair of home runs in her first two at-bats against Bearcat starting pitcher Lauryn Ticknor. Her memorable performance didn’t mean she wasn’t nervous, though. “I was sick to my stomach all week,” said Lorton, who finished 3 for 3 with four RBIs. “I’ve been like, ‘Oh gosh, two more days, one more day, an hour.’ I was counting down. This is so awesome.” Water from a Gatorade container splashed onto Centralia coach Ken Olson at about the same time Lorton finished her sentence. Tiger players hugged, danced, called friends and celebrated like champions. Ever since Centralia fell 2-1 to W.F. West earlier this season, Olson has emphasized putting losses where they belong: in the brain’s garbage disposal. “They’ve focused on letting things go -- believing that they can do anything at any time,” Olson said. “We want them to be confident and to play with as much confidence as possible. And they did.”
Across the diamond, W.F. West players replaced their cleats and zipped up bags. Bearcat coach Mike Keen was the last one to leave the dugout. Before he did, however, he took a good look at the Tigers, especially at the one wearing No. 4 on her back. “She put on a show -- the Ramona Lorton day,” Keen said. “Hit the ball, pitched the ball, did everything but steal a base. She had a great day.” So did the Tiger defense, as Tigers third baseman Krista Church, shortstop Lauren Liseth and catcher Jordan Scherer each made dazzling plays throughout the game when the no-no was intact. |
