Michelle Bretherton, a teacher at Rochester Primary School, was recently recognized for her commitment to geographic education. The kindergarten teacher was selected as one of the 2016 Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher fellows.

On June 11, Bretherton will begin the Lindblad voyage aboard the National Geographic Explorer to the arctic for a one-of-a-kind field experience, stated a press release. She will be accompanied by Lindblad-National Geographic expedition experts..

Bretherton will gain new knowledge to bring back to the Rochester School District and the community. She encourages students to seek a broader view of the world and hopes her students will see how they connect with the world to become caring global citizens, stated her biography.

She incorporates good stewardship into lessons and helps students think critically about impacts on local and broader ecology.

Prior to the trip, Bretherton will travel to the National Geographic Society’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., to participate in hands-on workshops on photography and outreach. She will have the chance to meet Lindblad Expeditions’ naturalists and be able to network with previous fellows.

Every year, educators are encouraged to apply for the professional development opportunity, stated a press release. This year, 35 highly respected educators from the United States and Canada were selected.

This is the 10th year of the Grosvenor Teacher Fellow Program, established to honor former National Geographic Society Chairman Gilbert M. Grosvenor’s lifetime commitment to geographic education.

In 2007, the program began with two fellows and has grown ever since.

The expeditions were donated in perpetuity to the National Geographic Society by Sven-Olof Lindblad and Lindblad Expeditions to mark Grosvenor’s 75th birthday in 2006 and to honor his service.
