High school students are invited to attend the annual Summer STEM Academy at Centralia College and W.F. West High School Aug. 1-5.

This year’s workshops include coding an online app, learning how to fly drones, and exploring scientific principles in microbiology, robotics, chemistry, ecology, geology and physiology.

“The best way I can describe the Summer STEM Academy is to say it’s a nerd convention,” Steve Norton, Centralia College science professor, said in a press release from the college. “It’s such an amazing week for these kids to explore all kinds of cool things.”

Norton said the activities are hands-on and are very different from what is done in a traditional classroom. He also said participants tend to come back year after year.

The cost to attend the Summer STEM Academy is $90, and scholarships may be available, stated the release.

The academy is open to all students entering high school this fall and includes grades nine through 12.

Registration and additional information is available online at www.centralia.edu.
