Our Views: Put the ‘Giving’ in the Holiday This Year

Posted

Lewis County has earned a reputation for its willingness to help those in need.

We see it in times of disaster and calm. When a neighbor is in need, the residents of this fine area almost always step up to provide.

Today’s edition carries several opportunities to cement that reputation.

As has become a Thanksgiving tradition for The Chronicle, we’re using our holiday edition to spread the word on the Lewis-Mason-Thurston Area Agency on Aging’s annual Wish List.

It details the needs of dozens of local seniors who are asking for a little extra help during the holidays.

Their requests are basic — firewood, gift cards, hygiene products and other items many of us take for granted.

While searching for deals on Black Friday, why not pick up a few of these items and help an elderly resident get through the season with a little more comfort?

To make a tax-deductible donation to one of these families or to the general Special Assistance Fund, call (360) 748-2524, ext. 101.

Another opportunity is through donating to local food banks, which see a surge of people each year as Thanksgiving arrives.

Many of us take for granted the availability of food.

There are many, including children, who do not know where their meals are coming from each day.

Finally, there is Giving Tuesday, a charitable answer to the consumerism of Black Friday shopping.

The United Way of Lewis County promotes the event locally each year. It encourages area residents to give to charitable causes during a time of year when many rely on them.

“Giving Tuesday is a movement to inspire generosity; not just another website to list our charity profile or an event that replaces our existing giving campaign. #GivingTuesday is an opportunity for United Way of Lewis County to draw attention to what our organization is doing in the community and its impact.” said Debbie Campbell, executive director of United Way of Lewis County.

Those  interested in joining United Way of Lewis County’s #GivingTuesday movement can visit www.lewiscountyuw.com/giving-tuesday  and discover ways to give back to the community through the campaign.
