Our Views: Karvia’s Life Is One Deserving of Long Lasting Recognition

Posted

When The Chronicle selected longtime community leader, volunteer and public servant Donna Karvia as its 2016 Person of the Year earlier this month, we had no indication it would be our final opportunity to honor her while she lived.

Karvia died Monday at the age of 78, leaving behind thousands of people who were positively affected by her seemingly endless contributions.

While her health was in decline, her death feels sudden and unexpected. We’re pleased to have honored her in these final weeks, but somehow it doesn’t feel like enough for a woman who attracted nearly universal praise and affection from all she came in contact with.

Karvia reflected the best qualities of community service. She was honest and effective as the elected county clerk and kind and compassionate as a member of countless community organizations and causes.

Her death leaves a noticeable gap here in Lewis County, where folks like Karvia quietly and constantly make a difference with no desire for public recognition.

In her final interview with The Chronicle only two weeks ago, she exuded charm and grace while reluctantly accepting the honor of Person of the Year. She spoke of her accomplishments and labors of love, always heaping praise on others.

She discussed the need for citizens to continue volunteering and offering their time and talents for the betterment of their neighbors and community.

She truly practiced what she preached, from her early days helping raise money for the Heart Foundation as an employee at Yard Birds, to her final weeks, when her attention remained on furthering organizations such as the Human Response Network of Lewis County, where she served on the board.

She helped form community health care options in Lewis County, advocated for the most vulnerable members of our community and shined a light of hope and positive change wherever she went.

It’s a contribution that deserves lasting recognition.

The Chronicle will assist in providing it through the creation of the Donna Karvia Award for Public Service. Details will be announced in the months ahead.

For now, we join the many people of our shared community who are mourning the loss of an incredible woman.

Beyond sadness, we stand at a full salute, inspired by a life that truly brought meaningful change and positivity to our corner of the world.
