Letter to the Editor: Voters Need to Demand Interaction from Herrera Beutler

Posted

Now that Jaime Herrera Beutler has won the election, we all need to contact her and let her know we want — and deserve — a representative who actually wants to meet with her constituents, listen to our concerns, and answer our questions.

I remember hearing Carolyn Long say (at one of her 45 in-person town hall meetings held throughout the district) that meeting with the constituents is/should be a requirement of the job.

Even the editorial board of this newspaper agreed that Jaime needs to improve in this area. During the campaign, Jaime refused to debate Carolyn and explain her positions and she continued to refuse to hold any in-person town hall meetings.

This is pretty arrogant behavior on her part. She decided early on that she didn’t have to work to earn any votes because people in this district would vote for her simply because she is a Republican.

That may have worked this time (although she should take note of how close an election it was), but it is insulting, to say the least, to the voters in this district. Even those of us in this district who prefer a Republican representative deserve one who wants to interact with her constituents. If Jaime continues to refuse to do so, we need to find another candidate who will.
