Letter to the Editor: Vote for Candidate Who Puts Working Class First

Posted

In an Aug. 9 interview with The Columbian newspaper, Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler said, when asked about Trump’s tax reform, “I don’t think I could have … had it this good.”

Had it this good? Let’s review:

 1. The plan, which will add between $1.44 and $1.8 trillion to the national deficit, will direct 87 percent of the gains to the top 1 percent of Americans. Any middle class gains are temporary and will run out in 2025. At that time, middle- and lower-class earners will probably pay more taxes than they do now.

 2. The tax plan has allowed companies to buy back billions in their own stock without substantial gain to their employees. Harley-Davidson is using the windfall to move a plant to Thailand, putting 800 workers out of a job.

 3. The plan guts the ACA, eliminating health care for over 13 million Americans. Elderly people will likely see premium increases that will cut healthcare for millions more of the people who need it most.

Herrera Beutler voted for this bill, along with an astonishing 91 percent of Trump-proposed bills. We need a congresswoman who puts the working classes first and not just the top 1 percent.
