Letter to the Editor: Please Attend Meeting on Therapeutic Whirlpool

Posted

On Monday, Centralia school superintendent Mark Davalos will answer questions at a meeting about the condition of the therapeutic whirlpool at the district’s pool facility.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the meeting room in the pool facility.

The whirlpool has not been functional for over two years. It was used mostly by senior citizens after doing water aerobic workouts, though anyone can use it. There are over 20 well-attended water aerobics classes in the pool each week.

The district sought a bond in the 1970s to build the pool facility. The city also committed to help fund it’s maintenance with the district. The community was told the facility would be available to the community to use when students were not using it.

The district has used levy money to fund pool operations and repairs. Thorbeckes, the city, and the school district currently have an agreement for the operation and maintenance of the facility.

The therapeutic whirlpool is especially beneficial to seniors. In my case, my doctor recommends exercise, massage, and heat for my arthritis. The whirlpool jets and heat can do that.

Others seniors have joint replacements and recovering from injuries, but most just want a place to relax after their workouts and let the heat and jets soothe their muscles.

Many feel they paid their taxes for the facility and have supported school levies that have clearly marked maintaining the facility, yet the therapeutic whirlpool goes unusable for lack of repair.

They wants the commitments made by the district and city honored and want to understand what the issue is.

If you’re interested, please attend the meeting.
