Letter to the Editor: Napavine’s Refusal to Allow Citizens to Vote on Bus Service is Unacceptable

Posted

In a recent Chronicle article about expanding bus service to Napavine, the mayor was quoted saying that there were “higher priorities” for the city than allowing the opportunity for Napavine citizens to vote on whether they wanted to be included in that expansion.

First, Napavine would be the only city in Lewis County to reject the chance for its citizens to vote. I find this unacceptable. The only thing that the mayor and city council would have to do is allow the vote.

What could be a higher priority than creating an opportunity for those without cars, low-income families, the disabled and students to have access to transportation for shopping, medical appointments, school and work opportunities?

Having access to transportation could transform their lives. Imagine taking the bus to Winlock to go grocery shopping at IGA. Students would have more access to take classes at Centralia College.

Those without cars would have more opportunities for employment. Kids in Winlock and Napavine are often seen either walking or riding their bikes between the two cities to visit friends. It would be much safer to have them ride the bus.

The mayor’s decision to not allow a vote is short-sighted and ignorant. This decision should be left up to the citizens of Napavine, not dictated by the mayor. I, for one, would vote yes on the expansion.

The cost would be minimal, about a penny for every $5, and would be paid mostly by the customers of Loves, Starbucks, Taco Bell, Arby’s and the other fast-food restaurants. Trust the citizens of Napavine like myself to choose for ourselves and allow a vote.
