Letter to the Editor: McDougall’s Campaign Financed by Special-Interest Money

Posted

For several weeks, our mailbox has been filled with slick election pieces — vote for this, against that and on numerous occasions, papers extolling the reputation of Centralia School Board candidate Mandi McDougall. These have all been paid for by various unions, including the Washington Education Association and the Centralia Education Association. Their expenditure for one seat on the Centralia School Board Exceeds $82,000. Yep, that’s not a misprint — $82,000.

That represents about 10 times more money than has ever been spent on a school board race here before.

What questions might be raised by the Unions’ actions? Will Mandi really be a representative of the patrons of the school district, or will she simply vote as directed by her benefactors? Are the unions afraid of just one independent voice on the board who will actually look at the budget and ask tough questions about funding and programs?

Her latest advertisement states, “Mandi McDougal is one of us.” I don’t think that parents and taxpayers will be fairly represented by someone who accepts $82,000 in special interest money and then claims to be one of us.

It is vital to retain some independence on the Centralia School Board. That is why I support Jami Lund’s re-election. I urge you to do the same.
