Letter to the Editor: Claims About Work Environment Under Dorey Misstated

Posted

I, as an employee in the Lewis County Assessor’s Office, wanted to clear the air about the working environment in our office.

I believe that Dianne Dorey is leading and managing the office in an efficient, ethical and fair manner, and that implications otherwise are unfounded.

I have gone to her numerous times with questions about how to do my job properly or better, and she is very approachable and knowledgeable in answering my questions clearly and thoroughly. Other employees have stated the same to me. Dianne puts in long hours and contributes greatly to our workload also.

I know that the assessor’s job (and at times the employees’ jobs in the office as well) is not a popular or easy one. Making sure that values are fair and equitable is a tough job, and I understand, as I am a taxpaying resident of Lewis County also, and a former real estate appraiser. I also know that being correct and fair about values is the paramount concern for both residents and for the Assessor’s Office.

I feel like Dianne can and does answer any question posed by taxpayers or by employees, as she has experience in all facets of this office. She is in an elected position where knowledge of the entire appraisal process, as well as the other programs, levies, exemptions, and other departments of the office are crucial to being able to fairly equalize the taxes paid by us and by all of the property owners in Lewis County.

In my opinion, she is absolutely doing her best to be fair, equitable and ethical in dealing with us as well as the taxpayers.

I hope that this clarifies questions about the Lewis County Assessor’s Office. By the way, I enjoy working in the Lewis County Assessor’s Office (as do many of the other employees), and I hope it shows to the public whom we deal with.

There were a number of other employees willing to sign on with this letter, but I have chosen to submit this myself to avoid any issues.
