Letter to the Editor: Bloomberg for President

Posted

What major consideration(s) do I give to a candidate who is seeking the highest office in our nation? A question deserving serious, not political, consideration.

Many decades ago I had a political science teacher who had a philosophy he used in considering candidates. His philosophy was relatively straight-forward. What are the requirements of the office in question and who best, all things being considered, has the experience to fill those requirements?

The office of the President of the United States needs a person who has the knowledge, skill and experience of a chief executive officer such as a governor or large city mayor; a person with experience in selecting and overseeing cabinet level positions.

Some of my teacher’s reasoning was that governors, and large city mayors, have cabinet level positions they need to fill with people who can do those jobs, and, work with legislators.

Most often legislators don’t have the experience of selecting and filling cabinet level positions as well as overseeing their performance. Whom does a legislator have reporting to them? Office secretaries, research and office aids, a speech writer or two, a campaign manager, etc. Considering a legislator’s background experiences in education, government, etc. does not qualify them for that all-important area of cabinet level administrative experience.

For President, it was his opinion that given the choice between a governor, large city mayor or a legislator, the legislator would not be his choice.
