Letter: Evangelical Christian Women’s Support of Trump, Moore Perplexing

Posted

Democrats Rep. John Conyers and Sen. Al Franken, both accused of sexual improprieties, have resigned their seats in Congress. In the past, other Democrats in Congress accused similarly, including Texas Rep. John Young, Utah Rep. Allan Howe, New York Rep. Fred Richmond, Washington Sen. Brock Adams and others have either resigned their seat or have lost re-election due to loss of Party support.

Republican pastor Mike Hintz, whom George W. Bush commended during the 2004 presidential campaign, surrendered to police after admitting to a sexual affair with a female juvenile. Republican Larry Dale Floyd was arrested on suspicion of soliciting sex with an 8-year old girl. Floyd had repeatedly won elections for Denton County, Texas, constable. Republican judge Mark Pazuhanich pleaded no contest to fondling a 10-year-old girl and was sentenced to 10 years probation. Republican Party leader Bobby Stumbo was arrested for having sex with a 5-year-old boy. There are many more Republicans who have lost their elected or party positions over improper sexual activities.

A self-confessed Republican sexual predator is in the White House. Seventeen women accused Trump of previous sexual assaults. President Trump showed his disdain for women on the well known Access Hollywood tape. Roy Moore, Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Alabama, has been accused by credible women, some of whom are Republicans, of sexual molestation while they were children. Moore was in his 30s.

When the Access Hollywood tape was made public we heard, in Trump’s own voice, his view that sexual dominance of women was a perk for men of celebrity. I was absolutely convinced that the tape would end Trump’s run for the Presidency. Surely, Americans would not elect a person with such beliefs?

Needless to say, I was astounded when Trump was elected. I was speechless when I discovered that over 50 percent of white women in this country voted for Trump. Now polls are suggesting that nearly 70 percent of white women in Alabama say they will vote for a possible pedophile.

How can this be true? According to the magazine Christianity Today, white evangelical Christians cast their ballots for the real estate mogul-turned-politician at an 81 percent to 16 percent margin over Hillary Clinton. Polls in Alabama suggest that 70 percent of evangelicals plan to vote for Moore.

Evangelical Christianity teaches that women are inferior to men. The Bible calls women a weaker vessel. The Bible teaches women are to be married, keepers of the home, bearers of children, and sex partners for their husband. Quite simply, the Bible teaches that the world of women only revolves around husband, food, children and sex.

I concluded that these women probably vote for these sexual predators because this is what they are taught and this is how they expect to be treated. As long as these women are raised to believe that they are inferior to men, they will accept dominance, sexual and otherwise, as being commanded by God. Hopefully current scandals will allow them to take another look at unquestioned beliefs.
